My friend just bought a new Chevy Colorado. Very nice truck. However I have a question, what is the reason that the bed depth of trucks are so much now?

For example, on our 2001 Tacoma, as a female, I can easily reach over the side of the rear bed, and the rear tail to put stuff in and out of the truck.

We went to OSH with her truck, and I wasn't able to reach in *from the side of the Colorado* and get anything out of the bed. I had to get up on the rear bumper to get things out.

Are consumers demanding beds be deeper?
Is that the reason for the side of the bed to be so high?

Or do all truck owners have Norwegian height, and it isn't an issue?

Our beds are pretty shallow IMO.

While a shallow bed might be easier to reach into for some, it makes a truck pretty useless for carrying anything for everybody.

Maybe you're just noticing a difference in overall height of the vehicle at the bed rails, and not that the bed is all that deeper? It's certainly a larger truck than the first gen, so I'd guess it's likely you're just having problems with a taller vehicle more so than bed depth.

I wasn't able to measure the bed depth. Just giving a real life example of putting things in our older truck vs her Colorado.

Thus I was curious, is the market demanding much more bed depth?

See my edited post re: overall vehicle height.

I don't believe the third gen bed is much deeper (if any) than my truck, and mine is too shallow for my liking.

I'll measure mine in case anybody wants to measure there's.. something nags in my mind thinking the 2016 bed is 2" deeper, though.

Not sure that's a sign of the industry changing to deeper beds, but would account for some of your issues.

    Well then..

I have a shell on, so I can't measure with exacting precision.. but at 19" that's the top of my shell rails. So, if I had to ballpark bed height I'd say 18.75" - seems about the same to me.

    I have a 2013.

So you think on the Colorado (I told my friend to measure the depth), that the SIDE of the truck is just very high, and maybe the bed isn't that deep? Its the Z71 package she has

    Found this while searching..makese sense

    "
One of the advantages of a midsize pickup over a full-sizer is, well, its more-manageable size, right? I should be able to just place that sucker on the bottom of the box by reaching over the sides of the box and be done with it. I shouldn't have to lift the object much above waist height in order to do so. After all — midsize pickup.

But the box is too damn high.

The Colorado's box sides come up to the center of my sternum, and I'm six-foot-one. Way higher than you (or I) might expect from the Colorado, a midsize pickup. I can bring that device up to my chin so that it clears the box sides, sure, but there's no gently laying it on the bottom of the box, that's for sure. It'd be a two-foot drop from that point.

Being able to more easily place stuff into the box is (or should be) one of the bonuses of a smaller truck, but in this case it isn't happening. Certainly our truck's Z71 off-road package has jacked the ride height up, so take that into consideration when configuring your Colorado

That's my best chair commando guess.

I haven't fondled one but seems like their proportions are more full size truck than midsize. They could have a higher belt line in comparison, I wouldn't think the bed is substantially deeper than the Tacoma, but it's not outside the realm of possibility - the GM twins really go after the work truck market, and a deep bed is definitely desirable for that use.

Yeah it was my first experience inside the truck. We took it for about a 20 minute drive. It was very nice.

This does bring up a good point. Whenever I use a fulll size for work events etc I'm annoyed by the height of tailgate and bed height. It's why these trucks like the F150 and GMs have the pull out step and corner foot rests.
I find both my last 2nd gen and now 3rd gen is just big enough for all around without it being cumbersome to load/unload or the need for a secondary step.
I was working with a general contractor once who started with a 2nd gen Tacoma and then went to a F350 and he said he loved the Taco but the bed was"useless " cuz he couldn't load much without strapping .
I agree somewhat for bulky items the bed net is nessecary IMO for the Taco.
Glad they raised it by an 1" this time.

Yeah the Colorado had these two "cutout" at the corner of the bumpers in the rear. That helped me getting into it from the back, but other than climbing on the tire, there was no "help" for the side.

Makes sense for the construction guys I suppose.

Bed widths haven’t changed from the 2015 model, and the lengths are extended by 0.2 inch, all while the box height has gone up 1.1 inches.
