Ha Ha! I bet, I got a 100 mile round trip commute so I have to go another route.

 

Good point, I guess overall weight should be my main focus.

 

For the winter I might just go with a 265/70/16.
I don't need anything that big for the winter as I won't be doing too much wheeling and if I do I'll have winters and summers on different rims so I can always just swap out, used to doing that for my car anyways in the summer when I used to track a lot. Needing to swap out my street tires for semi slicks. on the WRX or my drag radials for my TDI.

So since the wallet will be a bit dry after the truck and lift (which I'll likely be doing right away) I'll just get a cheapish set of winters then in the summer when I save up a bit more coil get a new set of rims and some 285 or 275s.
My commute has gone down so much for work, I'm not overly worried about MPG. My round trip is only like 60KM lol.
Not like my older commute that was around 120km each way.
Mind you that's hoping I remain on all the downtown jobsites and don't get sent out to the far ones again like last year.

 

You can get the 255/85/16 in the BFG KO2 MT's. I'll be upgrading to those soon. That's basically a 33x10R16.

 

I think the best thing to look at is what will you also be using the truck for?
Do you plan on wheeling?
If you won't be going off road maybe consider getting something like a pirerrli scorpion.
Something meant for a SUV/light truck.

Or if MPG and tires are a large concern and you will be wheeling maybe price out what it would cost for two sets? Given mud terrains don't have the greatest wear you could possibly save a decent coil not driving on them every day.
I know a friend of mine has a Jeep TJ and for his daily drive during the week he has some plain tire then on the weekends when he's hitting the trails throws on the Muds.

What's the specs on a 17" wheel compared to the 255/80/16? Also, what is the tallest you can get on stock suspension?

 

You loose 1" in width compared to the 265/75/16 for basically the same 31.6" diameter. I don't think you're going to get much fuel savings from that. Plus it's a very odd size. If you ever find yourself in a small town or remote area needing a new or used tire to get home on. You might run into a problem trying matching it. I know I had that very issue in S. Alabama a number of years ago.

31.5" is about it without any fit issues on stock wheels. If you never leave the street you can get away with a bit more. Going more than that if you like to go offroad, you'll probably have to trim the fenders a bit or use some aftermarket wheels with different backspacing.

 

Does the 235/85/16 fit a stock suspension?

 

Basically the same height as 265/75/16 that a lot of people put on stock suspension.

 

That's a 7.8% reduction in weight. That will probably get you a little bit of fuel savings. If you go offroad especially in sand that extra inch of tread will make a difference!

 

I've got the 265/75/16's on my truck now. I have no hit or fit issues with stock suspension. The 235's would just be an inch narrower.

 

Those are also listed as being 9.3" wide on a 6.5" wide rim. I believe my stock rims are 7.5" wide. I'm not sure how that will change how much of the tire meets the pavement.

 

I do occasionally drive in sand and that has been a concern.

 

I used to live in Florida Panhandle. I can tell you 235's in sand suck!!! I dug myself out of more sand holes on 235's than I care to remember...
