    Hey Guys,

I hope I'm not starting anything crazy here with the post title but I'm having trouble seeing the future and thought maybe the second gen forum could offer their opinion?

I recently picked up a '17 (model in title) and have about 500 miles on it. I've had a few issues with quality control but nothing too bad.

My wife and I decided to buy the new Tacoma because of its reputation and wonderful resale. And I've had a couple old (pre Tacoma) Toyota trucks. And have even made money on them.

After buying the '17 I took to this forum and found out that pretty much everyone hates them. The third gen section is crazy. I'm feeling buyers remorse and now the wife and I aren't so sure that this new crop of tacomas will hold their value like the last.

Long story short: I have the opportunity to trade my '17 for a super low mile, mint, black '15 TRD Pro.

We all know for a fact that the '15 will hold its value. The '17 is unknown. Would u guys think the '15 would be a safer investment. If one were to solely look at a truck that way?

The way an '85 access cab 4x4 22RE would be worth more than an '89 3.slow etc.

Can anyone help me predict the future before Toyota potentially ruins the "Tacoma" brand?

    Thanks for any help!

If you don't like it, trade it. If you like it, but are worried about resale value....I'm really not sure what to say.

Just do it before your 3yr 36 is up if you have that many problems.

The 2gen section was the exact same way when they came out. Everyone claimed Toyota had lost its way and that they would be worth nothing. Now everyone claims they're perfect and the 3gen is a mess. Don't base your decision on what people say on an online forum. If you'd rather have the Pro go for it. If you're worried about money keep your truck. You will lose way more on the trade!!

Without knowing how much the trade will cost you, I know I would make that trade if offered, assuming it was pretty close to an even trade.

    Bone stock. For now.
I've never driven a 3rd gen. But, a buddy I work with has a '17 with the same packages mine has. He told me he would much rather have my '15. And it's not even a TRD.

You are posting in the 2nd gen section, so answers will be biased. You will likely take a beating on flipping a brand new truck with only 500 miles. 3rd gen is more refined. 2nd gen Pro is going to be reasonably rare, for a Tacoma. But I wouldn't make future resale a point to sell an already purchased vehicle. Don't worry about others opinions on the forums (even if the 3rd gen section tends to be a mess), if you are happy with the refinements of the 3rd gen, keep it. If you really want a 2nd gen Pro instead, then do what makes you happy.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
    .
...^^^... My son ... Take the leap into the "hot boiling tar pit" with the rest of us

I have done this maybe 10 or 12 times and most of the Toyota trucks had small issues.

My old 22R(E) series was the best ... but these newer trucks are much more complicate, but not so bad and still in best.

FWIW ... My Gen 3 has been good with few issues ... Actually fewer issues than my last Gen. 2 TRD OR 4x4.

PS. Only the "Shadow" knows the future value of the Tacoma and what evil lurks in the hearts of man.

Is this an equal trade ? Can't really chime in till you tell us the financial repercussions.

What kind of issues are you having with the 17' ?

None of these trucks are good investments, but they sure do hold their value. Almost guaranteed that the 3rd gen will hold its value as well as the 2nd.

Trade it, and never look back.

The 3rd gen is tempting with all the tech goodies, but can't overcome the unreliability of the engine/transmission and other features.

The 2nd gen, although considered outdated, is much more reliable, which is what really counts. A 3rd gen waiting at a dealership for repairs is not doing its intended purpose --> reliable transportation.
