I purchased a 2017 trd off-road a month ago and I've noticed that when I back out of my garage or out of a parking space slowly, the tachometer jumps and the car momentarily speeds up or jumps as if I'm tapping on the gas. Anyone else experience this? I've also noticed the tach bump up when in park and I turn the steering wheel. I'm a little concerned there could be a bigger issue here.

    Thanks

Hey, I've also noticed that on mine. I don't think its a bigger issue non the less it is concerning.

Mine does it as well... its a known issue... Toyota has shown little desire to address the problem.

When you turn the steering wheel you are putting a load on the engine via the power steering pump. The engine then bumps up rpms to compensate this to avoid stalling.

I feel like this could me a big issue if you are off road and have to squeak through/by an obstacle and it suddenly lunges forward/backward. Ive never noticed the rpms increase on my 01 4runner when turning the steering wheel when in park.

This new engine is the culprit for allot of issues: previous 3.5 V6's did not have the list of problems currently driving 3rd Gen owners bats.
Going to an Atkinson cycle was a bad idea on Toyota's part... but they are pressured to reach the Cafe/EPA numbers mandated. This engine is just not suited well for a heavy mid size truck.

Mine just surges when reversing. Super helpful when backing up into a tight spot where inches matter

Do the TRD OR come with a different engine or transmission than the other V6 auto models, is that why this question is specific to the OR?

My offroad does it too, Just keep the brake handy. It's an issue if you have to back up close to a wall or getting the trailer ball under the hitch. It would really be the pits if you didn't have the back-up camera. Just remember to warn other drivers of your truck who won't be familiar with this problem.

if you had a problem you would have taken it to Toyota. You would not have posted about it on an internet forum

Correct. Power steering. Every car bumps revs to compensate for the load, particularly loads applied while at a standstill as there is greater power demanded to turn static wheels/tires.

Every vehicle I have every owned does this.

Those experiencing a surge in reverse, remember that reverse is a comparatively low range gear and to check if you have your AC on. If your AC compressor is releasing while you are backing up it is possible to feel a surge in RPM, which will then feel more substantial due to the low gear ratio. It's a suggestion. I'm not saying its the solution.

Actually, you troll, it's a perfect reason to post on the forum. It allows me to explore what others are experiencing before approaching my local shop :)

Normal.. Older FI cars do the same thing via the IACV or some other idle up when engine encounters a load to keep the engine from stalling out. This is completely normal. These transmissions are now directly linked to the ECU also, if not on it's own ECU piggybacked to the main powertrain (ECM, PCM or whatever you want to address it as) module, so they're responding much quicker and more efficiently, thus causing you to feel it more abruptly. Older cars had a delay or dwell time in response and much softer. There's a tradeoff...... It's fine when it's driving correct? Mine does this exact same thing.

The future of cars is going to autonomous anyways and that's we're designing here where I work. I can't wait to hear the complaints and comments about cars then when you go wheeling or driving when the AI interface doesn't want to listen. Just think about the Wall-E movie folks, because that's where we're headed!!

Driving will be a sport or a dying "skill" in 15+ years. Enjoy it while you still can.

The Air condition does this too, if I sit in park with the air conditioner on the engine revs every so often.

Yes, anytime a load or any load is detected, the revs will bump or surge a bit....

given it could be a safety issue if the truck lunged I doubt that
