Tuffy Box Rehab

Today I got around to yanking out my Tuffy Boxes to apply some sort of rust inhibiting protection, based on some threads I have read here on TW I sanded off rust and corrosion areas and applied RUSTOLEUM Oil based paint to the boxes I had some of this paint left over from my Bilco door paint project from what Im told RUSTOLEUM inhibits rust corrosion so I used it up and bought another small can and paint brush in same only FLAT black which should provide double coverage. My question is should I go the extra miles and put on a coat of rubberized undercoat layer on top of this like a 3M brand or RUSTOLEUM brand rubberized undercoating, I have read a few reviews on AMAZON.com from people who have had bad experience using these types of rubber undercoats because they never completely dry and attract dirt because they are tacky and have a tendency to crack up and chip off also. Im trying to prevent rust damage to this investment as best as possible these things are expensive and once you develop a rust hole you might as well throw it away and that would suck. The Tuffy company has recognized this rust issue and suggests using an over the counter rubberized undercoating after the box is installed. any input from experts is appreciated. Also if anybody know the screw sizes on the storage bins I know its a t-30 torx head but not the thread size I bunged the shit out of a few of them.

 

I would think the rubberized paint would hold up much better than the flat paint..
Figured me commenting would help refresh for more knowledgeable members..

 

one problem I have read is that if rust or corrosion has already set in(mine) putting on the rubber stuff only covers the corrosion and the corrosion will grow under the rubber coating itself, this is one reason I used rustoleum supposedly it will stop the expansion of rust and protect, I just applied a second cost of rustoleum on a little can goes along way a sets up very nice. also I have read a lot of reviews of the rubber undercoating stuff a lot say stay clear of it. also im using the oil based paint which works much better on metal that's outdoors in all the bad elements.

If rust is present..i have heard rubberized paint would not be good..
Should get a more experienced member with all these bumps..

 

yeah I want to do this once and that's it hopefully its right, just threw the last coat on the outside, tomorrow ill touch it up and do the inside at the bottom, let it dry should be ready to reinstall on Friday. I will post up the final coat tomorrow maybe it will help others who have the boxes, the Rustoleum really goes on easy with a brush and looks great too although no one will really see them mounted in the wheel wells.

 

Operation Tuffy box Rehab completed I gave the outside numerous coats and had extra paint so I did the interior too, got new screws from home depot the size is M6 - 1.0x 20mm(length) replaced the torx head with a hex head (10mm) for easier removal in the future, hopefully I will never have to deal with anymore corrosion issues
