I just updated the trip reports on page 1 post #2. I added Pilot Rock and Pismo Beach. I did it on @SlipperyTaco account cause I'm chilling at his house right now. So he gets all the credit. lol.

I made it out, had a blast

 

Put a lot of thought into it before you pull the trigger, I went with the Rotopax but if I was to do it again I would go with the jerry cans. Before I bought them I checked to see how many of them could be stacked and was told 2 of 3 gal cans can be stacked, after I got them and weighed them with the fuel they come out to 40lbs total for gas and cans. This is apparently all supposed to be held on by what is essentially a piece of 5/16" all thread bouncing down trails.....So yeah I modified the swing gate to support the load securely. Also, a little known fact, if 2 Rotopax cans are stacked on each other without being secured from moving, you can actually grab the corners of the outside can and generate enough torque to spin it, bypassing the locking mechanism and steal both cans. For extra support and security I drilled holes in the swing gate and welded in 3/4" round stock with heat shrink tubing for a wear sleeve.

 

I like that mod you did to the gate. Id probably walk right into those stalks when the pax are removed. Im still running into the handle mechanism with the gate open -- I have to get used to those dimensions.

I'd go with a single 3 gallon on the gate and a couple 4 gallons on my Prinsu rack if i do go with rotopax. I wasn't aware of how easy it is to defeat the lock mechanism. A false sense of security but like anything it's just a deterrent. A bike lock rigged to my tire on the gate and threaded through the pax handle will be the more frugal way as I see it.

I saw this Jerry can mount mounted to a gate and from the side I dont like the look. Plus I'm a long bed so that would push me out even further.

Yeah, the Rotopax look slick, but I think the jerry cans provide more flexibility, being able to carry more fuel, or a 5 gal each of fuel+water or whatever. And yeah, I leave the Rotopax on all the time, otherwise it looks like I'm trying to impale anyone that would rear-end me.

 

Haha! Word. I'd only be throwing the pax on for long trips. What have you heard about restrictions on Jerry cans and California? Anything?

 

I seriously looked into a couple years ago but the only thing I came across was the issue of availability. Generally the most preferred brand was Scepter and specifically the old military style plasic cans, but they are hard to come by and cannot be commercially sold in California, or mailed to California from out of state(I actually tried to order them from an out of state company and it flat out said "WE DO NOT SHIP THIS ITEM TO CALIFORNIA"). I never heard of anyone getting fined for using them, and when I checked it was OK to have them, its just that CARB has made it hard to get them, if you have family out of state you might be able to have them order the cans for you. While I didn't hear of anyone getting fined for having them a couple years ago, that may have changed since I looked into it. Might be able to pick up a couple off Craigslist, just be ready to pay a premium.

If you do go the Rotopax route, the CARB nozzle complaints are blow out of proportion IMO. After fiddling with it for a bit I figured it out and haven't had any spillage issues with them.

 

Awesome. I'll look into it further. The CARB nozzle can be replaced with the non carb on the rotopax but I'll fiddle with the CARB nozzle to get a feel for it. If I do go Jerry cans I'll order them and have em sent to my pals house in AZ. Thanks again, man.

Also, clever way to mount your Hi lift. Unique. I haven't seen that on a taco before. Mine still sits on my rear floorboard. I gotta do something about that

Vertical mounting seems to be a lot more common on Wranglers than Tacomas, I'll have to move it somewhere else after I put on 35s, the 48" Hi-Lift probably won't cut it anymore, and a 60" would stick up too far and look goofy.

 

I already have Coverkings in the wetsuit material.
