I drove it 2.5 miles home from the dealership last night. I drove it this morning about 2 miles on the freeway before I heard it when I crested the hill. So it happened 4.5 miles after being replaced. But it is very quiet and I can only hear it because I know what I'm listening for

yeah, thats not long enough. mine was quiet for the first few miles as well, especially at first when the fluid was cooler. In fact it was 100% silent for the first few miles maybe? And that was after the tech drove it earlier in the day. Take it on a couple longer drives and it'll get louder.

I have a 60 mile total commute each day though, so it took one day to be loud again. I posted a video some pages back on what it sounded like the first or second day after replacement.

I'm really busy with the truck this coming month on weekends. Moving a couch on Sunday. Hauling a bounce house, blower, and some tables 300 miles for my nephews birthday party in 2 weeks. Then a scale RC event in the desert, then etc etc. So it will get several hundred miles of hot time under its belt in a month.

Did you know people are buying used bounce houses because it's so popular to have them at parties? A coworker bought one on ebay and now we all use it for parties for free.

My sister got a slide one from her work from a sample sale. Got it for $200 with blower. You can hook up a hose to it and it's basically a water slide and has a bouncing spot as well. My nephews love it haha

I currently have 1680 miles on my 2016 TRD OR, and my rear end is silent. Note: I built and drove World Challenge cars, and I have a very keen ear for gear train and/or bearing noise. Not to mention, I am an R&D engineer, and I understand dynamics pretty well. I am wondering why some have it bad and some not at all. My vehicle was built in San Antonio this last July. You would think the replacements would be newer, and improved, than my date code. Perplexing...

I still think it's a manufacturing defect causing it.
i think it was z10king was mentioning how after they took apart the diff it had excessive wear (almost like a corrosion) on the pinion.
I'm almost thinking maybe their gear supplier is screwing up the metal compositions and its causing this.

Its got to be something in manufacturing otherwise everyone would be having the issue.

This could very well be. I have seen this in the semiconductor world with products from world class companies. It cost me about $6k, but a lab with electron microscopy and radio wave imaging, revealed impurities in the material. It is not an Uncommon thing for these occupancies if quality audits don't hold manufacturers in check.

i see it all the time in the trade. at least once a month we get a shitty batch of conduit where it either kinks or just splits on the weld when bent.

we don't find out till its off the truck and being used.

When they replaced my differential, the work order said something similar. When I told the service writer that I was happy that they found a culprit, he told me not to get too excited. He said they had to put a definitive diagnosis on the paperwork to get reimbursed by Toyota for the work and its likely that the tech made it up.

I still don't think they actually found anything wrong with mine and my second one was louder than the first from the moment I picked it up.

I haven't read every page of the thread but it seems like mostly TRD OR with the problem...sucks because I have a TRD OR.

I have +/- 2500 miles and can only hear the slight howl with the radio off. Right now I'm more concerned about my low RPM shuddering in 4th-6th gears though.

I'm too busy to play games with the dealerships so I'll get a case number around my 5k service and try to knock it all out at one time. That's assuming Toyota comes up with a real fix.

Sound is nothing more than a vibration within the frequency that the human ear can detect. Just because you can't hear that vibration above or below a certain speed doesn't mean that it's not there. It could very well just be too high or too low a frequency to be audible.

Honestly, I don't care what's causing it. I just want it fixed.

I should hope it would only be some weird sound harmonic. I think I may be developing this rear diff sound. It makes a faint noise at about 50 to 65 mph, very faint so far. I'm gonna monitor it to see if it gets worse, and keep tabs on you guys' cases with corporate and dealerships. I really hope this gets solved soon for everyone with this issue.

Toyota advised them to change the diff fluid and drive. The mechanic said it was full of shavings. After this, Toyota authorized carrier replacement and they performed it.

It was the best guess of the mechanic that the inner pinion bearing was failing or wearing out. They don't get to assemble or disassemble carriers in Toyota service centers. That's why Toyota only sells the whole assembly as one unit

The conversation, we are having here, is good. I would imagine Toyota's engineers swim through these posts. These posts can help them think from different angles, especially if a drive train expert chimes in.

Mines only happen between 50 to 60. Mph. I am dying to put some new tires and wheels on but this howling thing spooks me. Toyota sent me a survey yesterday asking me about the truck I gave them poor remarks on quality control. Not that it matters they more than likely don't even read these surveys

I am sure that Tim Morrison (VP Customer Service) gets statistical reports from his Executive Analysts.

Got my complimentary warranty paperwork in this week and you are correct, it is transferable - not sure why my case manager insisted that it was not. Not a huge deal though, as I plan to keep this thing well beyond the warranty period.

I still have the howl in the upper 60s also, not sure if any of you other guys have noticed that yet. It's rare that I stay at that speed for very long, but it is definitely there, even though it is a lot more faint than the 50s howl. Truck runs and drives great, so this is just more of an annoyance at this point than anything else. Let's hope Smitty's field tech wasn't lying and we'll see a solution rolling out within the next month or so.
