2016 rear ended, advice?

This sucks..
Was rear ended tonight and the other driver drove off before I could get any info. As you can see the trailer took the hit like a beast but the truck not so much. Just from some basic wheel well measurements, the passenger side is an inch higher than the driver and all the bed gaps are messed up. Body shop says no way it's totaled but can't know for sure details till it's up on a frame jig. Either way I'm going to loose money on the deal with insurance or trade it in as is for a new one identical to it. I'm too OCD for my new truck to show frame damage on a car fax which will come back to haunt me in the future. What would y'all do?

 

One other thing that bothers me is that this truck was perfect prior. It was built last October in tx and had none of the regular issues. It towed my trailer great, was not low on fluid and never any weird noises. What's the chances I would get another one like it..

 

probably transferred all the energy to your frame.
all the gaps being off are usually a sign of frame damage. Totally sucks dude.

 

That sucks man, I got rear ended a couple of months ago and I'm still going back and fourth with the fucking body shop to get everything right. Gaps between the bumper and truck are not right...pissed me off because it's a brand new truck and it already has cosmetic problems.

I did and they will, minus my $500 deductible. I just hate haveing a black eye on my truck for value and knowing it will never be right if they have to pull the frame.

Curious, will an insurance company total the truck automatically if the frame is damaged? Or is it only if the cost of the repairs are above a certain % of the worth of the truck?

 

What was the weight of your trailer loaded ?

 

I can only guess but I'd say about 2500#. 6x12 in size FYI.

 

Body shop and insurance told me frame damage meant nothing, it was based on %.

 

its almost always %...just usually frame damage is enough it makes it totalled.

Are the gaps only on the rear bumper and bed or are your door and hood gaps fubar too?
If its just the bed and bumper, you may be lucky and no frame damage just bumper and bed were shifted out of alignment.

 

I was thinking the same thing, especially since you can see the hitch is now bent downward.

Just bumper and bed, but could one side the bed being higher now be possible if its only out of alignment?

 

While you're right there's a good distance between rear bumper and trailer, the hitch should run roughly parallel to the bottom of the rear quarter panels, but in the first pick you can clearly see there's a big difference in angle.

 

what do you mean by higher?
Like one specific corner or like the whole passenger side is higher?
1 corner I'd say most likely just the bed is messed.

Whole side...well hard to judge could be just the bed, could be frame.
Like the body shop told you until you get it on the frame jig its hard to tell.
I've seen cars that looked fine at first then on a jig the frame is pretty fubar.
Mind you I've also seen one I would've thought for sure frame was done for but it was perfectly fine.

 

Ground to center of wheel well is an inch higher on passenger side. Looks like it's higher in the back and gradually declines towards the cab. I'll get better pictures in the day light tomorrow.

 

I was in your shoes once. With the great residual value of these trucks your insurance is very likely to fix your truck. Your truck probably worth $30,000 "just guessing". For your truck to get totaled repairs would have to be more then 70% of your trucks value or more then $21,000 "again just a guess". From the pictures it doesn't look like it would cost more then $20,000 to fix. I have Allstate ins and this was explained to me by them. I know it sucks. Make sure you get money for diminished value

 

I would personally trade her in/get a new truck (I was in a similar position). The average individual may get it repaired and never think twice, but in the end...the buyer needs to feel good about their purchase. Based on your comments...You will probably pick apart your repaired truck/look for flaws...and most likely find some flaws. Quite literally...the vehicle will never be the same in 90+percent of accidents.

In the end...you need to put a number on how much peace of mind is worth to you.
