So i'v looked at every page I could. checked all gear calculators but I'm not sure if it's a 4:10 or 4:30. The diff is out of is a 98 regular cab Tacoma with a 2.7 and w59 transmission. It had 30 or 31 inch tires stock. It has 43 teeth on the ring gear and I can't see the pinion gear. Also it takes 4+ turns of the pinion to 1 turn of the ring gear. I attached a picture to show how far it passes 1 full turn of the ring to equal 4 complete turns on the pinion. Any help would be greatly appreciateddownload_20160919_200528.jpg

Do the math. 43 divided by 10 = 4.3 or 4:30's. No other numbers work with 43 teeth on ring gear.

So all tacoma pinion gears have 10 teeth?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    4.10

    4.30 wasn't introduced until 2000.

Shit bolted onto other shit, and junk.
Your markings show 4:10 since you are closer to 36* nowhere near 120* or 1/3 of a turn past 4 rotations.

The 43 tooth math post is correct. The side gears in an open diff may or may not turn equally in the same direction when the carrier is rotated.

So I marked the tooth as well as the side gear they spun equil. Do all pinion gears in all toyota diffs have 10 teeth? Also it's out of a 98 tacoma. Is it true 4:30 only came in 2000 or newer?

36* vs 120*. It's not even close. My money is on 4:10. It is how you measure with the third member in the axle by marking the drive shaft and turning the wheel so why not trust it when it is out?

From the picture it looks like 4.10, but I'm trying to figure out how you can have 43 teeth on the ring and a 4.10 ratio. That would mean 43/4.10=10.5 teeth on the pinion? Is that math not correct?

Have you removed the fill plug? I could check backlash on my 8" clamshell through the fill/drain plug. This would be a way to count pinion teeth without breaking it open. You may need to stick a light down in there but that was the only place i could get access on mine. I know is is the 7.5" but just a try to count teeth.

Any way you can get the name plate from the door jamb of the donor truck?

Not to question your ability to count (I certainly can't), but have you double and triple checked the ring gear tooth count? Maybe you should just pull the 3rd member and count the pinion. Maybe there is a magical 1/2 tooth there.

It's a front 7.5" clamshell, so you have to break it open. However, on my 8" you can count the pinion teeth through the fill plug hole.

The simple math does not lie. You are not accounting for potential differential action going on between both side gears.

Go jack up 1 rear wheel and spin it 1 revolution (open diff, trans in neutral). Count the pinion turns. Pinion turn count looks a little low doesn't it, like about half what it should be?

Again if you have a 43 tooth ring gear there is no pinion tooth count that will yield a Toyota ratio other than 4:30.

If you must count turns, then count pinion flange (not side gear in your pic) turns to 1 ring gear turn as observed thru the oil drain plug hole.

Yes this is a 4.30 if it has 43 teeth.

As dirty pool has explained, simple math.

    It's not a 4.10

Ok I'm going to sell it as a 4:30 diff. It seams like the general concensus. If the guy I got it from will get back to me with the door jam sticker life would be a lot easier.
