Now that everyone is so focused on this thead, maybe someone can answer my question.

Has anyone ran a

$323 CKMA12 On-Board Air Compressor High Performance 12 Volt for Air Locker Differentials and Tire Inflation

CKMA12 just through the switch, and not the relay? I'm only trying to run it for filling tires, and don't want this entire harness running around.

I'm guessing the switch won't handle the draw from the pump.

 

probably going to have to run a relay that can handle the higher amperage and the switch be the momentary master switch

 

The compressor comes with a relay so I'll use it. Just would rather have a simple, clean set up without all the hoohaw

Not sure that I need the switch tho... I just need the dpdt relay...

It is the ON/OFF/ON that I didn't understand I was purchasing.

The wire is huge on it. The only kind of switch that can take that load is an isolator switch or a disconnect. Use a relay

 

Run it thru the relay. It's not as much hassle as it seems, and mucho protection for your Elec system. Plus, truck fire and back country= bad.
Where are you mounting the pump? Mine is behind the drivers side back seat. Wasn't much hassle to extend and run the harness. The twin fits there too.
If you want to make the trek to Auburn, would be happy to help wire it. Or can provide pics.

 

Run the relay and keep it in the engine bay some where.

Run a single, small gauge wire thru the firewall to the switch in the cab. You don't want to bring 40 amps into the cab and certainly don't want to put that much power thru the switch.

 

That would be a great trip, but I've already got to much on my plate for October. Be safe and post pics when you get back.

 

Exactly the way I ran it. Also the thing is super loud and gets scolding hot . Keep it in the engine bay. I mounted mine next to the airbox

 

Yup, under the hood. That's what I did with a

$584 CKMTA12 '12V' On-Board Twin High Performance Air Compressor, Ideal for Air Lockers Locking Differentials, Tire Inflator, Air Horn, Air Tools and Pneumatic Tools.

Wierd mine doesn't get that hot. With the pressure switch, only runs when filling, for a few min per tire. I leave the seat back forward for about 5 min and it cools off enough.
Not like my Vaiar 380 that melted the hose off the fitting!
Also if you have a 2011 or newer, the spot on the pass side in front of the fire wall is taken by the secondary air pump. Still fits, but super tight.

 

I'll be in greater Seattle area this weekend, but in Black Diamond on Saturday for Tough Mudder. I'd like to meet up in Snoho but don't think it will work this trip.

On the compressor topic, I have to agree with everybody else, run the relay. I am an electrician for a living. 40 amp takes #8 copper or #6 aluminum wiring to be safe. Don't use aluminum wiring. A switch for more than 20 amps becomes a disconnect and you don't want to put that in a truck. Also, don't run 1 wire through the firewall. Run 2. That way, you can send +12v in to the switch, then have it come out the other wire to the coil of the relay. I wouldn't run anything smaller than 22 gauge to trigger a relay, and make sure the wiring is rated to be water resistant, something like THWM THHM or TWHM2.

I ran Ancor 16 sheathed duplex to the switch, and 8 to the pump. Super fine strands so they don't break down as much from vibration and flexing, also tinned to resist water migration. Get from West Marine. Expensive, but worth it.
Run is short enough you won't get voltage drop with the bigger wire.

Touch the air manifold after filling 8 tires. It gets hot. And yes the newer body style has a diiferent layout.
