So its been shitty and cold out. Today I decided to take my truck to a car wash and rinse her off and do what I could to get it clean. I washed the truck and when I got to the rear I noticed that the bumper was rusting on both sides of the licence plate in multiple spots. Mind you this is an 2010 that I got a bit over a month ago. I about shit a gold brick. Im dealing with the dealer over the rear TSB rt now so when I talked to him I didnt want to bring this up as he might think Im one of those whinny customers but I couldnt believe it. When I take it in for the TSB I will let them know and see what they say. Mine is an SR5 DC 4x4. Has anyone else seen this yet and will they cover this under warranty or will they make it rust out first? Let me know what you think

I have the same issue though mine is a 2006, few years could make a difference. I just tend to watch it more closely. Its about the size of a couple pencil dots, though it looks larger than it really is. I just now make sure I polish the bumper twice a year. I thinks its the way its designed that water sets in there and has no air to dry or is not regularly hand dried. Just make sure you dry that spot every time you wash, throw some polish on it, I use Meguiars Chrome Polish.

I washed the filth off my 2010 Tacoma TRD Off Road today and was really disappointed to find small rust spots beginning on my rear chrome bumper. Unbelievable! My truck is just 1 1/2 months old with 600 miles on it and rust spots are showing. I plan on taking it into the dealer next week and showing them the defect. Can the chrome job be that thin or the metal that poorly prepared for this to happen so soon? If it continues, and I can only assume it will get worse, I will request a new bumper be installed. And if the replacement is no better, then I might attempt to have Toyota install a color matched bumper and eliminate the chrome all together. Am I being overly picky with this or should I press the matter?

My rear bumper don't have rust yet, but you can see on each side of the license plate its a shitty finish. Its not mirror shine like the rest of the bumper. Prolly saved toyota .00001 cents savings per truck to not properly chrome it.

I just washed my new, 2010 SR5 Double cab w/ the long bed yesterday and notice rust coming through the the chrome in the rear bumper. The rust is on the end of the bumper. I got this truck right before christmas. This should not be happening to a new bumper. It must be a crap chrome job. I want to talk to the dealer about it. The only problem I can see is if this is happening to recent buys any bumper that replaces it might have the same defects.

The dealer I bought the truck from is about an hour away and I do not want to go there. They suck in most ways. For warranty work I can bring it to any dealer, Right?

Wow, 3 2010's, all with chrome rear bumpers rusting?

Makes me glad I A) have the 2009, and B) have the color matched bumper. Which might actually be plastic?

I actually think the color match rear bumper is actually a type of metal... now the front bumper, yeah its plastic

    None, yet.
The EPA has made it more difficult/expensive to do good chrome plating. This is one case where a Chinese aftermarket bumper might have better chrome.

Ugh...chrome....thats why I love my non-chrome trd sport with color matching bumpers!!
1 week after purchase I got a scratch on the rear bumper and I will watch it close but it seems to be some sort of plastic.

After a few months in my 08 I noticed what looked very much like rust on the bottom "elbow" of my chrome bumper, however, it turned out to be some other fouling. It would not come off under the normal rigor of a car wash, or wiping with wet wipes with soap. Eventually it did come off after I went after it with a stronger solvent.

    Can you post a pick?

i have a 2007 tacoma...dealer took pictures sent to toyota they will not honor warrantee and will not replace the bumper...ive filed a compliant with the NHTSA office of defects....I suggest you folks also do this...this is not right that a 3 year old car would be rusting out!

2010 DC 4x4... Same deal, truck is 3 months old and I found small "discolored" spots in several places on rear bumper. To cold right now to try and polish off... maybe whatever Indiana is spraying the roads with is really harsh

I dont know if youve heard of a product by Eagle called Neverdull. I use it on my harley all the time for Chrome and it works wonders and is safe, have been using for years. Anyhow I put it on and it took all the surface rust spots off wonderfully. I talked to the dealer when I took mine in for the TSB on the rear spring and he said that you have to keep a good coat of wax on them or they get that surface shit. I bought some X2 by Maguires to use after I used the never dull but havent got around to it with this fine weather. Needless to say with the neverdull I havent had it reappear yet. Give it a shot I think you will like your results. It is only for the Chrome tho cuz it has a bit of gritty material. You work it in and you will see the rust go away. Let it cloud up just like wax and then buff it out with a good soft cloth, micofiber is the best. hope this helps

Picked mine up on 12-4-09 and I have the same issue as the others. Rust on both sides and around the license plate. Took it to the dealer and waiting to hear back. Should not happen with less than 3000 miles.

The edges of my 09 bumper are starting to rust. I'd be happy with a color matched replacement, but I doubt I'll get anything out of them. I may just rough it up and spray-bomb it basic black.
