My 2004 Tacoma has 254000 miles on it. (4x2 manual) So I'm thinking about what my next Tacoma should be. I love my Manual transmission but the new tacomas only offer a manual with the 4x4, which I don't really care about. Will the 4x4 transmission last as long at the 4x2? I'm really trying to talk myself out of a Nissan Frontier, which costs less, but might not last as long anyway.

Any thoughts on the longevity of the 4x4 transmission?

    Jeff

With the new truck only having been out for a year, we can only speculate as to the longevity and durability of the updated 6MT with information from the 2nd Gen Transmission.

There are a number of 2nd Gen. transmission threads for that and many here have put a whole heck of a lot of miles on them.

I love my TRD Sport with manual.. the 6 speed tranny is REAL fun to drive... hit the trails and hold on buddy.. my dog loves to go wheeling with me. Even driving around town is 2wd its a blast. I just have to hit a trail once a week to keep the parts lubbed... or throw it into 4WD-HI around town in the rain if you don't go wheeling. It's a blast really.

Smoothest shifting car or truck I've ever owned. Been driving manuals for 40+ years too!

I believe that is the case, at least when I look at the build site in SouthEast Toyota territory. No 4x2 M/T options that I can see.

The build site only looks at existing inventory.

I looked at the specs in the Tacoma ebrochure and could not tell from the table matrix. It only says maual is standard for SR, TRD Sport, and TRD Offroad.

Go manual, biggest reason right now is the auto trans is having some issues for some. Biggest reason down the road, you will be still driving a manual as this truck should be driven.

I love my 4x4 manual TRD Sport. As bobbrown up there said as well it really is a blast driving no matter what conditions you're in. Are you positive they don't make any 4x2 manuals? Are you looking at 6 cyl vs the 4 cyl? You should be able to get a base 4x2 4 cyl 5 speed easily I'd think.

The auto trans has been a known issue for some. They have had to take it in to the dealer for reprogramming, some have not been full of fluid. None of these issues are possible with a manual. And I love driving dirt roads in my 09, I expect to be enjoying it just as much with my manual 17.

Save yourself a few bucks by buying used [but newer] . I never buy brand new myself as I can't see taking the hit but that's me I guess.

After the TSB and the ATF topped off the majority have been happy. I understand you can row your own gears but that doesn't mean yours is not low on ATF either.

I'm not saying the trans aren't fixed, I'm saying that people are having issues with them, I have not heard on complaint about fluid being low in a manual. If I have two choices, 1-automatic and its common knowledge they are having some issues, or 2- manual which has not been an issue off the assembly line (I have read about some shifting issue later on), what is the smarter choice?

I'll take my chance and go with the one that is coming off the line ready.
