Loved the one pair of Lucky jeans I had, the denim was soft and comfy. They got destroyed by my bike crash and EMT shears a few years ago though.

The next pair of jeans I buy will probably be the Intercept PD ones from Triple Aught Design. Spendy, but I've never been disappointed by their products. They've got a mil/vet/first responder discount program too.

Looks like @EddyRRT was busy building you a bumper AND some racks to hold the tube stock in the back ground.

Please don't start out with a baofeng, and if you do, don't stay there long.

My only equipment advice I give other than that is to find 2 or 3 radios you like with the features you want, pick the prettiest one. :) If you need any other help, please ask! You also have D-Star and DMR available to you in your neck of the woods, as well as a statewide linked repeater system. There's lots to play with and learn!

I wish that was an option. It would make the radio tower and stack of equipment in here much more easily explained.

@JimboAnz you got a canopy to bring to AOP? I'll buy one if we need one to sit stuff under while we are out wheeling and stuff. I'll probably need to throw bags of clothes and what not under it so I won't be cramped wheeling

Wasn't planning on it. I've got a buddy who absolutely raves about the Kenwood handheld he has, so I'll probably start there. Eventually I want a handheld, mobile, and stationary rig but that'll take a while.

Mainly wanting to keep in touch with family/backup comms during an emergency. Also want to get involved with ARES/RACES; they're emergency communications/response groups in ham radio. That and there are a lot of different awards and contests that are great for training/practice in general.

Well there is that to a point, ham handheld units have a lot more power available than normal walkies. Can't do the talk show thing though as that would be broadcasting, which is a no-no except for very specific circumstances. Ditto the making money part, except again, in very limited circumstances.

I gather it's so you don't cook yourself when you're playing with microwaves. I'm sure there's more to it, but I've only read a bit of what Rev sent to me in the past about it.

More to keep people who don't know/understand radio from causing problems/interference, but safety is part of it.
