I've seen it happen with my own eyes at a off-road race. Snapped, dug into the dirt and lifted the rear end throwing it sideways resulting in a rollover.

The Mythbusters test was done at 15mph with a old towncar. I'd say they're busted on their busted theory.

The entire driveshaft is new. The only thing reused was the front and rear flanges.

Original driveshaft made it 135,000 miles and 11 years. New driveshaft made it 6,000 miles and 9 months. Either they used undersized components or they got a defective part from their supplier. Either or the driveshaft is their product and their responsibility. Maybe I'm missing something?[/QUOTE]

Hmm really curious what the cause was, def update us and let us know. I don't see any rust within the broken area which is a common sight with a sheared u joint for example because it will be cracked for a while then snap off but you never know it until you see that rust inside the crack after the fact.

For some reason my brain is thinking that the double cardon joint being in the middle created stress there because it is much heavier than a reg u joint ? A double cardon has completely different installation requirements IE: the pinion should be aimed right up the shaft dead straight. It can handle more angle but should be run much different at ride height than our OE set up. I bring this up because it looks like you have a 3" ish lift in the back without any axle shims and to get that rear pinion aimed up as it should be you would need some pretty serious shims like 5 degrees or more ? could a big heavy double cardon not operating within spec cause stress like that ? I am not an expert in any way just throwing out a crazy guess on the off chance it will yield inter web glory if I am right :rimshot:

You're right in that there is a difference in setups between the stock and double cardon configuration.

There are 3* shims installed. You can see them if you look closely. The rear u-joint is at a 2* working angle at ride height.

I suppose it needs to be perfectly inline and running at 0*, but I'd think there would be premature wear and failure of the u-joint before shaft breakage would occur.

I'll post the results once I receive them from the driveline shop.

Don't suppose you have photos of what you made?
I need the stiffener's myself however with my undercover swing out bed boxes they'll get in the way. I'm trying to figure out a way to make both work, which includes making my own.

They're supposed to be picking up the driveshaft this morning so they can inspect it, but I already found out the problem. Remembering I had the stock front shaft tucked away in the garage I pulled it out for a comparison.

Comparing to the stock midship stub reveals about a 13% difference in diameter.

Now to see how they handle this situation.

    Can't help with 1st gen.

I am second gen, running unmodified Wheelers super bumps in front with 1/4" spacer to compensate for larger tires. I have been very pleased with their performance.

You might be able to adapt them to work. I just don't know anything about 1st gen tech.

I recommended the wheeler ones to my buddy after looking at his Baja Bug. I think he drilled and tapped a hole and put them on. Pretty easy.

Yea I run them in the rear with my shock relocation/deavers but think the problem for the front was that they were vertically too tall. Looking for an alternative to cutting/shaping them that other first gens are running with stock lowers
