I did the same survey a couple of weeks ago and was very honest. A couple of days later I got a call from Toyota Corporate. They had already set up a case number for me based on my complaints in the survey and wanted to discuss them. They didn't realize that I already had two case numbers on file that had been escalated to a case manager, but they were proactive about following up so the do use the survey for something.

Toyota offered me a Platinum warranty when they replaced my differential and it did not solve the issue. I think they have done this with most of the folks that have taken their trucks in for this issue.

Oh, I'll have to keep that in mind if the sound comes back after the replacement.

Yes mine howls noticeably up to about 65-66 mph. I know sounds can be hard to pinpoint directionally sometimes in the cabin, but i swear at 65 mph it sounds like it is coming from up front. But at 59-60 mph, i for sure hear it from the rear. At 67, regardless of on or off throttle, I get an odd, separate howling/whistling/ringing noise. Only happens at exactly 67 mph and is 100% speed related, I have no idea if it is related to this issue.

This truck just likes to howl and whistle for multiple reasons

Unless you're one of the first to get an updated part that we don't know about yet, it'll come back. Just make sure to get it documented that it's still there when it does, if for no other reason than to make sure you're covered if an issue ever arises because of it.

I have driven less than 20 miles after rear differential replacement and the noise is back between 50 and 60. Now it is most prevalent at 55mph instead of 59mph like before it was replaced. I will be calling Toyota after school today or tomorrow.

Nothing. They looked at it again at the dealer last week. All they came up with is that there is a noise and they don't have a fix for it. I told them to write me a check and they can have the truck back. I am currently looking into lemon law. I am totally frustrated with this. I payed top dollar for this Tacoma and it sounds like I am driving an old dump truck.

UPDATE (after my first rear diff replacement)

Ok my first rear diff fail at 3400 miles and was replaced on August 26. Now after 3200 miles later and almost a month later the rear diff completely fail. Grinding noise this time... a regional representative of my area looked my truck on the lift, and rear pinion seal was leaking, he interview me and asked me a lot of questions of my use of my truck.... now my truck is at the dealership for a 2nd diff replament and also he mentioned a TSB for a weather strip around the doors for the wind noise. Now im driving a 2017 tacoma DCLB trd offroad

Is it only the 8.75 diff that is having the howling ? My trd sport MT has the howl and I'm getting tired of it. Not worried about it failing, just annoying.

Man! Now I'm beginning to wonder if mine will fail. Hoping the howling was just an annoyance. Guess not. Toyota may have a big problem on their hands.

Been under water countless times, off-road countless times. I use it daily to drag cars into the shop. Had E range tires since 800 miles.
