Clearly the USA players are on the defensive. Kessel's comment was funny, but clearly found an open wound. Contrary to Backes' belief, it's impact will eventually fade. It wasn't malicious, it was 'very Phil Kessel'. Personally I appreciate his sense of humour. A quality that is sorely deficient in too many NHL players.

Honestly, Kessel didn't direct that to the players. It was quite obvious. And the players should be thinking 'he's right, why isn't he here?' Some of their comments are just dumb. Parise said Phil had surgery so the tweet didn't make sense. But actually it did. They made the selections last spring when he was healthy and busy scoring a ton of goals for the Pens. It was quite clear that he wasn't going to be added to the team, even after Calli dropped out due to injury and I believe 1 other player. It had nothing to do with the players or anything that just happened. It had everything to do with the planning and selections that were made back in the spring.

I saw nothing wrong with Bobby Ryan's tweet. It was purely a joke. Also, to me, he isn't an automatic to make the team. I probably would've added him but I am not 100% shocked if he doesn't. Kessel on the other hand, there was no excuse. He has been USA's best player in international play, pretty much every time he was on the team. He probably should've won the Conne-smythe and had a ridiculous 2nd half of season for the Pens. He would've made Canada, let-alone USA. Just total trash decision-making by USA hockey, as an organization. The players should know this.

 

The irony is that it is Kessel who kinda deserves to be the hurt one. No matter how well he plays, he so often gets slighted, be it the city of Toronto, team USA, at the all star game or simply because he looks chubby.

 

Well that blows ass!!! I so SOOOOO wanted to see it as Canada vs NA for the final. Fuck'n Russia!!! Blah!!!

I don't know who plays who. I wasn't even able to watch this afternoon's game. Just sucks that NA is out because Finland was so terrible.

I'd say Toronto treated him ok in terms of how the management and coaches treated him. I still like him as a player and he was never Torontos problem. Yes, he had a tendency to be streaky but I think he'd even admit to that.

He didn't make team USA though because Burke thought he could build a Canada beating team without him. However Brian Burke isn't as amazing as he thinks and he failed.

I know I've been rough on USA the last couple days but it's just that I am passionate about the program. Either way, hope the boys get that last win.

 

I would actually disagree. Europe game he had like 4-5 breakaways, including a 2-0. Canada, all of the goals were odd. He didn't really get straight up smoked. I blame the team in front before I blame him. But I'm not going to sit here and act like Quick was great. And who cares what Hrudey says anyways. He's a hater because Quick has made him a very distant memory in LA.

 

As an outsider, I sometimes had the impression that Kessel was blamed for the Leafs shortcomings during his years there.
