Look to see MAYBE a turbo for this engine in the future. I think that's what they are doing at Lexus...

I'd trade up a gen for a turbo, 3rd gen can't tow without flooring it. Hoping for a diesel still.

Not for the 3rd gen. Wouldn't be surprised to see turbo sometime down the road.

Have you driven or towed with the 3rd gen? Diesel doesn't make any sense to me for a midsize especially for the U.S market. The GM twins offer a diesel though.

Ha, I waited years for the 4.0L 4Runner kit that was promised forever with the same dream and has yet to come, only answer I got was an electrical connector problem.

Sad to see TRD bails on these when I finally dump the 4Runner and move to a Tacoma ha.... oh well, what can ya do ha

The one thing I can say is Tacomas have a huge following and tons of aftermarket support. 4runners have a cult like following too, I just don't think it's as big as the tacomas. with Trd dropping the supercharger program and the amount of Tacoma owners that wouldn't hesitant to drop 5-6k on a supercharger you would think someone would want to build one. If someone could come out with a Ca legal s/c that added 30-40% hp they would sell the hell out of them. @Gadget@URD

I haven't driven the 3rd gen but I have been comparing the power band on the 2nd and 3rd gen, the third gen makes the same power at 1000rpm higher meaning when I tow my camping trailer and get to a hill, I have to floor it.

I'm probably looking to eventually get a Silverado unless Toyota brings a second engine. I'd like to see a turbo diesel or the 4.6l from the Tundra.

Why diesel, the Ram Ecodiesel get amazing gas mileage and has the torque to pull my small travel trailer comfortably.

I had a kenne belle supercharger on my dodge 5.7 1500 and it was worth it.

If they made one for tha Tacoma I would have ordered one.

So whats the hold up on someone making one for the 3.5l. I get the development costs, testing etc....seems like there is enough of a demand. Is it because the ECU is a bitch to reprogram?

Not sure why any one would buy a 3rd gen for towing...it is exceptional for so many other things...."Ie" off roading.....towing not so much

..................Not sure about the demand........but this motor is part of the bow down to the a nannies in Washington to satisfy the MPG mandates....just my opinion mind you....yes the ECU on the recent Toyota trucks are a big issue....real tunes are pretty much a not.....at least ones with real data to back it up..

There are a lot of folks that say they would drop 5-6+ k on this or that but who knows what the real number is that actually would.I think it sucks that Toyota has dropped the TRD supercharger program...but its probably better financially than to spend $$$ on R D to meet the mandates the nannies in Washington are proposing......IMHO the problem isnt with Toyota its the over reaching constraints that the govt has placed upon the automakers......and others...
