See I learned something new today.

 

Alright I've got a quick question about bumpstops on a first gen with mt.

First, many people use wheelers bumps up front in the stock location but since the bumpstop itself is too "long" you get virtually no uptravel before you are bumped. The wheelers also bump all weird an off camburg an buldge out the side etc.

To throw a hydro in is still a thought but would require new bump plate and some fab, which I'm fine with.

So the question is.. is there any good solution for bumps on a first gen with mt?

I have seen it done, and it can be done well. However there are a lot of variables involved here that would take a lot of work to explain. Depending on your fab skills, level of suspension knowledge and the combination of parts you have you can do it and get some good ride gains from the setup. But like I said there is a lot to consider and it's not as simple as just putting a bump in the stock location...

 

I believe I can fab it but was looking to do that last case. Since the goal is not smashing whoops I wanted to stay on the poly urethane side.

Just wondering a descent bump setup. I've seen people shave the wheelers for the fronts

 

Thanks, run one per lca or stick with traditional Toyota setup with 2 per lca?

Also consider with some of these bumps that they are not all hard poly. These multi layer ones are more progressive and if you are very close to one at ride height it's not going to be constantly "banging" on the bump, it will be a smooth transition and be a nice ride.

 

Yea I understand, this is how the wheelers sit in the front bumped an the shock is stopping before the bump really making the bump worthless almost?

Adding spacers to it would make the truck just sitting on bumpalso have heard that on hard hits the bump completely deflects off to the side virtually allowing there to be no bump

 

I haven't tried the wheelers stuff personally so I can't really help there. I have more experience with the higher speed hydro stuff...

Disregarding the price, as well as the time and effort to set them up correctly, is there any reason why you would not recommend hydros on a stock arm?

I understand the answer may be they are completely unnecessary for most builds, but wouldn't they be the best solution if trying to dial a nice MT setup?

 

What's a good spring rate up front? Also what's a good pressure setting for rear shocks with deaver leafs. My trucks gonna be used as a daily driver but a little off road fun here and there. No bumper up front yet...

Is there a rule of thumb for the amount of preload the coils should have? I recently finished building some Fox 2.0 coilovers (not a Tacoma) to replace my aging OME/Bilstein front setup. I started with 400x12 springs (same rate as OME) but didn't get the ride I height I wanted so I bumped up to 450 lb springs. I had to preload the springs down about 25% to get to desired ride height, which seems excessive compared to other coilovers on other vehicles. Is there anything negative about having that much preload? If I bump up to a 500 lb spring but with less preload will that basically be the same thing as I have now or will the ride dynamic change?
