Well ive been thinking alot this weekend about my taco. I was wondering if a lift kit is really just for looks or dose it really help you on the trails.

Yes my truck is gonna be a weekend warrior. Mud, Sand, Rocks, ECT. I don't know if a lift would be worth it.

My local shop quoted me $2800 for 3" lift 285's and 17" wheels. I think that's a lil high priced. BUt If I only get a lift it's $699 installed. Then I'll go out and get 265's with my stock wheels. Or would that be "gay" looking to have stock wheels on a lifted truck???

So my question is is it really worth it?? Should I just get a lift and 265's or keep it stock with 265's. I don't have coin to get wheels right now, But I was thinking if I just gonna beat them up why spend all that $$$ on them.

They don't make lifts & bigger tires for nothing.

It all depends on YOU. What types of trails are you gonna go on? It's only worth it TO YOU on the types of terrain you're gonna be driving on.

Do some research. With some mechanical knowledge and help from some buddies, you can install up to 3" lift at home and keep your $ for other modifications.

Get out on the trails with your truck AS IT IS now (no lift). You'll soon learn what you need and want to make the expereince better. Having lifts & bigger tires is all about ground clearance.

lifts allow for bigger tires...bigger tires, in general, are better for OFF ROADing

Ok, I got it now. I just was worried about flexing and possibly breaking something.

Also doing a lift can that void my warrenty???

My 5100s at 2.5" of lift I feel handle bumps and chop at higher speed much better than the stock shocks, and obviously I have that much extra ground clearance, so I feel that it increased offroad performance. A set of nice coilovers will increase it even more. I have been running stock tires for 2 years with the lift, and it's not my favorite look, but it's not hideous or anything. I am getting 285s in the next couple of weeks though.

Moss-Maggnusson Act- There is NOTHING you can do the automatically voids the warranty.
If you have suspension or driveline issues- You may not get warranty coverage for those things if you have a lift- but it's on the dealership to prove the lift caused the issues. There is no reason that your lift kit should void the warranty that covers electronics or engine parts...

Yes it does help. Just as, if not more important, is armor like sliders and skids.

Keep your 16" wheels- tires will be cheaper and you lose nothing. What kind of lift are they installing? Lifts that look great on pavement can be miserable for parts life and wheeling.

dOES A LIFT ALONE GIVE YOU MORE GROUND CLEARANCE? I thought the lift just allowed for bigger tires, and the larger tires give you more clearance? maybe i'm wrong?

I'm sort of new here, but from what I've read in this forum, the lift gives you added clearance plus the ability to put bigger tires on your truck which also give you added clearance.

I do know it will give me better clearance...But When it comes to crossing big voids over trees creeks, Flexing to it's compacity, I would think the lift would harm my truck??? No maybe im wrong and just thinking too much.

I don't know what "brand" of lift. I just talked to the shop owner on the phone. But I know it's a 3" lift.

Also the shop owner said to run 285's, Well I don't know about that. I have a 4bangger 5spd stick. I can see where it will burn out my clutch on a trail.

I am not looking for a brand name. I am looking for what kind of suspension lift: spacers or coilover?

we didn't discuss that part. I just asked how much would a 3" lift would cost, And what size of tire/wheel...Calculated up to $2800. Maybe I should call back and get a re-estimate.

Yes, because you don't want to be wheeling with a spacer lift.

Ok, That's good to know. So I should get a quote on a coil over lift. ;)

Thanks man, I could have made a costly mistake.

Yes. I think you could do this stuff cheaper than what he is going to charge. As what he is going to use in the rear too.

how does a lift alone (without bigger tires) give you better ground clearance. All the lift is doing is "lifting the body of the truck higher off the axles right? Or does an actual suspension lift give you more travel, hence increasing ground clearence?
