I understand they left things out to help keep the costs of a 4x4 down, but I would like to have seen...

    *More wheel offerings-options...but not necessary.

    *Higher quality airflow and fans.
When I have my fans at their lowest setting you can really hear the fans going. I know others have mentioned that the truck doesnt warm up as fast as other vehicles, but I would disagree. Living in MN I know the truck warms up at a decent rate, the problem is that the system just doesnt move enough air to do the heat justice.

    *More available driver info somewhere
Things like gas mileage, miles remaining, etc. would be handy. I didnt realize how much I enjoyed having that in other vehicles.

Otherwise all 'n all Im very happy with the purchase. The stereo is sufficient for the average user (though Ill be replacing it as Im not an average listener), the MPG is really fair considering its a 4L truck, etc. If mine goes the distance on mileage, consider me a very happy owner.

I hate the easily scratched paint, light tailgate, plastic beds(argg), easily scratched plastic where the seatbelts hit(retarded design flaw). #1 piss off is the bitchy little plastic bed hooks. Why dont they have LOW metal bed hooks, the plastics ones dont let you secure anything to them and are too high up to allow for secure tie downs.

My 2010, 1700 miles is a little rough shifting. 6 spd manual. I have to shift slow and when the gear engages it's not real smooth. Not happy with that at all!! I have always owned a manual and have never replaced a clutch so I'd like to think I'm not the problem.
    Stock Tires suck!
I can see why highway drivers would have a problem with the high torque gearing but i like it for towing and country road/ hilly driving here in VT.
Not that good on gas for a yota. I don't really care though I bought a Truck!
Otherwise I love this truck and love it doesn't come with an ashtray. WHO WOULD POLLUTE THEIR TACO W/ SMOKE?

    Scott
There is a change holder under the fog light switch. It's hard to spot right away but it's there. Pull down on that little lip in the dash. Did you find a big difference after the quick shifter was installed?

Here is what toyota needs to do with the tacoma: they need to make a hardened version with the following: dana 44 axles front and rear (yes a solid front axle / differential), fully boxed frame rails, disc brakes all around, bilstein 5100's all around, suspension that is already dialled in correctly, A METAL BOX IN THE BACK, a tailgate that is solid, and a selection of completely bullet-proof engines with a minimum of computer control to include a diesel AND completely bullet-proof transmissions whether automatic or manual. These trucks should have the toughest paint available with a minimum of color selection. Metal should be massively treated to prevent rust even if driven up north where they salt the roads with calcium chloride. And no carpet in the cab either. And maybe even a decent stock sound system if they even put one in at all?

These trucks should have a minimum of luxury crap on them to break and should last a lifetime of normal to hard use without breaking. What we are talking about here is a survivalist type of truck that is built to last a lifetime and work correctly right off the showroom floor. For guys who want a real truck not a cheap whore of a truck with wimpy suspension and all the rest that has to be fixed before it will perform.

Now the people who want a luxury car with a box in back won't like this kind of truck but the rest of us would be in truck heaven if toyota would actually make a truck like this. If only toyota would listen...

Check out this link for a solid-axle swap done on a first gen but still has some excellent links for suppliers etc.

Interesting comment on the front axle. Toyota trucks built elsewhere around the world have a solid front axle hence they don't build those trucks for the USA. From the reading I've done toyota built the independent axle for the U.S. only. This is why when you see a shit load of people with cargo on a yota elsewhere ie india or the middle east the front axle (allegedly) gives them the truck they need to last forever and carry the world....

What do I dislike about my Tacoma? The customer service support provided by Toyota. I can deal with defects, squeaks, and premature failure. In fact, to some degree, I expect this with what is a relatively complicated machine. What I can't accept is going to a dealership with a concern and being blown off like I'm nuts. I should not have to return to a dealership multiple times to have a concern addressed, nor search for one that will provide adequate service.

'Nuff said. I'll step down off my soap box now.

I hate how easily the seats get dirty. I have shampoo'd this truck more than my 3 previous Tacoma models I've owned.

REALLY don't like the fact that you can't leave engine running and lock the doors with the remote key fob. Sucks in the Winter when you'd like to come back to a warm car after a quick errand. Have read about the work around here but haven't tried it.
