No idea on 0w-40. I use 5w-30 in temperatures between 50 to 120 degrees and nothing's ever went catastrophic. I've used 10w-30 once, didn't have a problem then either.

Yeah, I always do in all my vehicles. I like the lower ambient temp weight, the 'w' number, because it'll flow easier and faster. I like the engine operating temp weight to be a little higher for protection. Granted this Toyota engine is very easy on it's oil, like most all other Toyota engines. There's a lot of influence from outside sources that goes into the weight that Toyota recommends here in US or any other country that has stringent emissions requirements. Just an example that I'm familiar with, the 80 series Land Cruiser here in the states gets a 5w-30 suggested oil weight. In Australia, less stringent emissions IN GENERAL(not always of course) Toyota recommends 10w-40, if I remember right. But I know it was definitely a higher weight on the operating temp weight. I've read a lot over at the forums on bobistheoilguy.com and came to my own conclusions on what I wanted to try in regard to oil weight. I've also sent in various samples to Blackstone Labs for oil analysis to make sure everything was A-OK with these changes in oil weight. FOR ME AND MY EXPERIENCE, I'm not saying others should or shouldn't do it, BUT FOR ME, these oil changes have been fine, if not improved the analysii I received from Blackstone.
Even after saying all this, you'll very likely be just fine sticking with 5w-30,lol.

I'll try and do some searching on the internets to see if there are some other oil weights that Toyota recommends for these engines in other parts of the world, and if they do, try to find out why. It's likely they do, just sometimes it's difficult to find for some reason. The way we found about the 80 series is from a forum member down in Oz posted up a copy of his FSM from down there. It was kind of shocking at first, and then when you start to look at other things that can influence why Toyota would do that, it starts to make sense.

Yeah, you won't have issues with most oil weights. Shit, you think people might get crazy ideas??? Now I wonder if I should remove some of that post, I'd hate for guys new to auto mechanical stuff to get the idea they can mess with their oil? Even though it'll very likely be absolutely fine, as long as it's full. Any opinions on if I should delete some of that stuff? Wouldn't bother me at all.

I'm pretty sure Kurt sold it, I remember seeing a pic with him and the guy that got it. Lucky. that was one of my favorite trucks on here, same color I got too so that helps.
Speaking of which, I pulled up a pic of it recently cause I think I'm gonna paint my rocker panels the same way he did...looks badass

I like doing that too, going over everything before winter so I don't have to roll around in the snow/ice, unless something breaks! Good time to grease the driveline if you haven't done so already

Chit, thanks for the reminder on the driveline. Spaced it, not that it's not easy to do. But can be easy to forget.

Yeah man, you can't go wrong basing a choice of yours on what he did. That was such a sweet build. One of the best vehicle builders around. And to think he and box rocket are roughly in the same area...

    improved toyota goodness.
replaced my tie rod ends and changed the oil in the front diff... I could not get the lower drain plug out so I siphoned all I could out and refilled from the fill hole... 2 qt 4-6 oz came out and the same amount went back in.
fluid looked pretty good for having mixed with the leftover nasty stuff from the bottom since last time i changed 30k miles ago!

Unbolted the rack and OTR and took out the lca bolt/alignment cams and got it put in the right way (shop put it in backwards). Also cranked up the driver's side co's half an inch. This punch from Amazon helped a ton. Alignment in the am!
