Dealer confirmed the howl, wants me to leave it over night to perform transmission TSB and investigate the howl, giving me another Tacoma loaner no questions asked. And so it begins.

So mine is in the shop for the 10k service and transmission TSB. I asked them to check out the noise coming from the rear between 50-60 mph. Just got a call from the SA and said that the tech hears it, test drove another on the lot (to see if it is common to the Taco)and didn't hear it on that one. They have to consult TASS (?) and let me know what the result is. Said a regional guy would probably want to look at it but not sure when...

This dealer sucks.....never got a call from the SA that the truck was ready so I go down there at 5 to pick it up or at least figure out whats going on.

SA left at 4 and didn't tell anybody anything about where my truck was at......nobody knew anything.

Manager finds the truck and says they have to get a regional rep out to look at it, nothing they can do about it. Will have to bring it back in.

In other news.....had the TSB done for the tranny and it seems better now. We'll see when if it has the delay still in the morning.

So I have a 16 DCSB OR with M/T. I have a whine with light throttle but it's only at 48-49MPH. I don't hear it above or below that. Is this likely the same issue?

So add my truck to the list of howlers that is getting the runaround...the dealership is trying to blame it on my Magnaflow exhaust. They want me to come back during the week so they can call Toyota tech. What troubleshooting steps have dealerships taken to determine the problem?

My dealer removed the rear drive shaft and drove using front wheels. The differential noise was gone. This might help to eliminate the exhaust as issue.

Ask them to explain how an exhaust would cause speed related issues? And why they don't hear it at any RPM in any other speed range?

But I'd find another dealership anyways, since they obviously have no clue what they are talking about. I wouldn't trust them to be able to replace the differential correctly....

My dealer sucks, they will either never hear it or deny that it's anything more than wind noise. Doubt they will even actually drive it. But worth a shot

I really want an extended warranty for this truck now, maybe if I bug them enough with issues they will offer one like others got, tricky part will be getting them to admit there is an issue. I gave them print outs of misfires I am having and they told me that they hooked up their computer and there are no codes, which I knew, told them it's in the monitors. They said no issue without CEL go home.

This is what I did. They then said it sounds normal or possibly caused by my tires. Told me a Toyota field tech would need to drive it. Brought It back the next week and the Toyota tech drove it and said it was normal?

The general consensus from Toyota is that it's considered normal "at this time". A handful of us have heard from field techs that Toyota is aware of the noise and working on a solution. They can put it on a lift and get it up to speed to rule out wind noise and tire noise. Also if it is throttle sensitive, that should rule out both as well.

I've been following this thread for some time now and it seems like this is the only major 3rd gen issue left that hasn't been resolved one way or another. Discouraging to hear that Toyota is dragging their feet on this and hasn't rustled up a legit fix.

I just got word that my 17 TRDOR DCLB MGM is getting built in Baja tomorrow and dealer should have it at the end of the week. I've had the deposit down for a little over a month and highly anticipated every minute. Now that the week is finally here I'm looking for that 20/20 perspective from those of you experiencing the frustration of servicing your brand new 40k truck with no foreseeable light at the end of the tunnel.

Would you still pull the trigger knowing what you do now? Is this issue tolerable considering all the upgrades over tried n true gen 2 or should I be looking for a barely used 15? Hesitant to just suck it up and hope yota eventually gets their act together. Any insight would be appreciated.

So I was waiting till the 2017s came out before I bought my Tacoma. I actually bought the same model you're ordering. My thinking was that Toyota would have a lot of bugs sorted out by the second year. Well I got the truck and noticed the rear end howl pretty early on (~300 miles). I also had the park-drive shift delay which mean't they hadn't performed the TSB on my truck at the factory. I've heard of some people who have the TSB already implemented from the factory on their 2017 so it's possible mine was an early build that used the same ECMs used on the 2016s. But I got the TSB performed on the truck and I took my truck to the dealer to demonstrate the rear end howling. They noted down that I came in for the issue, that way when Toyota comes out with a fix, I'll go in and get it done. And it saves me from leaving my truck at dealer for days with them taking apart my rear diff and stuff. In any case, I do not regret buying my truck. I still enjoy it and am happy I bought it. Sure I was a little disappointed in the issues but I know they will get fixed and its not a huge deal to me. Sure the howling gets annoying at 55 mph but I can live with it. As long as the howling isn't causing damage to the diff (some people have mentioned that it isn't and is just a resonance in the diff itself), I'm fine with it. For me, the only issue I currently have with the truck is the rear end howling. Other than that, I'm good.

I'm not sure yet. I got the tsb for the manual trans sticking done. That's better. I have the howl in my diff but would have never noticed if I didn't read it here, I almost know for a fact my dealer will say it's normal or can't hear it so waiting for it to get worse. I have very slight misfires, which I can see live on tis computer but the dealer says no code no problem. I'm a little let down in this truck, I really like it.... but the issues have me worried. Might get an extended warranty or hope I have even more issues where the dealer just gives me one. So at this moment, I would say no I wouldn't buy again, but I'm not going to trade it in. Maybe ask me again 3 years/30k

What date did you pick up your 2017. I picked mine up Aug 22nd. I am not experiencing any shifting problems or delays yet, but I was wondering if I should get the TSB done. I got the howling noise around 1300 miles. When i go in for my 5000 check I am going to ask the dealer to check my rear diff and transmission fluid. I may have them go ahead and do the TSB also. I just want to make sure I get these problems documented

Thanks for the feedback. Do you know your build date or month? When I get there I'm planning to check the LCAs and ask for an extended test drive. I'll look for any shifting issues that are supposed to be addressed by the TSB. Also going to insist they check the trans fluid level. Should I also have them check the diff fluid? I've read some posts about low diff levels and dirty fluid with shavings...
