I got swirls all over the truck. Entire truck. Can only tell in the sun but still. Also got some longer buffs on the sides from shrubs that barely rubbed against it.

First off what can I do? Swirl x doesn't get rid of the swirls.

Secondly, besides good washing practices which haven't seemed to matter. What can I do to protect the paint more.

Or is this simply a reality of owning a black vehicle?

Welcome to the black paint ownership club.

    Touchless washes.

Dry off with a leaf blower.

Don't let anything touch the paint, ever.

It's fixable with lots of thoughtful and careful elbow grease.

But consider that to be a regular maintenance interval, like bi-weekly if you want to keep it looking new.

It's hard to beat a flawless black finish, but it's a lot of work and time to get there and to maintain it.

Toyota paint is super soft, just looking at it the wrong way will leave scratches and swirls. I have a black truck allso and on most other vehicles youd need to compound then polish but the paint is so soft i can clean it up with just a polish.

Wash from top down. Then use polishing compound (Wolfgang total swirl remover) then wax. Change the rag frequently. Use microfiber applicators and polishing rags. Two out of the three of our vehicles are black. My 11 Tacoma is white. Still streaks but not as visible.

Welcome to Black! My only black is my Harley, and that's enough "swirls" for me.

My first new vehicle purchased in 1993 was black. Never again for the reasons you mentioned. I love the look of a clean black car but, it is so hard to keep looking nice. Only way I would get another black car is if it was a Corvette or some other toy car. Not again for a daily driver.

My previous car was black. Miserable. Besides the swirl marks, I had hard water so I had to get a water filter for my hose.

Also, when washing it at home - take the nozzle off and let the full hose rinse the car off. The water *Should* sheet right off and leave you with less beads to microfiber off.

Any brushing against shrubs causes friction from wood and roughage. It will always scratch. Note to self, "don't rub up against foreign objects with vehicle, unless you want a bit of Missouri pinstriping. Even snow will cause scratches."

Same with my magnetic grey metallic... the paint on these trucks are such shit. If I knew earlier I would have just bought a silver one. Pisses me off. My old car I practiclly could have cleaned with a Brillo pad and there would be no marring or swirls.

Wash top down, use good soap, use the two bucket wash technique, I even rinse the wash Mitt off after each body panel. Dry it with a blower. Bought my wife's black 2015 4Runner last year and doing that while keeping wax on it makes a huge difference.

All of my families black vehicles, we do a yearly wax strip with dawn or palmolive, then apply Zaino after removing the imperfections. Then keep a good coat of meguiars NXT to it. Its not perfect but it shields the majority of the small scuffs away. If you have some "high traffic" areas you can consider paint correction then having the clear protective film to those areas.

Yup. Look up the 2 bucket system with grit guard and dedicate at least 2 different mitts (not including wheel brush) to washing your truck. 1 for the top/middle of the car and 1 for the lower/dirtier portions of your car.

A light hand polish like swirl-x or a glaze will fill in minor swirl marks but will diminish over time. If you really want to get rid of them all you'll need a Dual Action buffer, some good pads and a rubbing/polishing compound. You might look into having someone apply a semi-permanent coating to help preserve the clear coat as well.

Adding to the already mentioned information. I agree with the two bucket with grit guards system and good microfiber towels. Invest in a random orbital polisher, good polishing pads and a good one step correcting compound like Menzerna FG400. Griots garage has just upgraded their old 6" polishers with new models that have a longer "throw" so you can pick up the old version at a pretty reasonable price right now, currently $149.

Or, if you have Amazon Prime, you can get it for the same price and two day shipping!
