They probably won't do anything for you. Won't have shavings until you drive it a few thousand and is pretty normal. You can maybe mention the lca whistle at 40mph and they can probably do that immediately but doubt anything else

If I had the chance to do it over again I would buy the exact same truck. Sure the diff howl is annoying, but keep in mind that we've only seen a few that have "failed", and I highly doubt those failed as a result of the noise many of us have. If you do happen to have the diff howl with your truck, just get it documented. I feel confident that Toyota will stand behind it so long as you don't do anything to void the warranty on it. I also suspect we'll see a solution of some sort rolling out, hopefully soon.

Bottom line: I would not let this issue dissuade me from buying these trucks. Just my 2 cents, for whatever it's worth.

I haven't heard about any misfiring, which is troubling even if minor. Have you checked gaps on your spark plugs? Not that you should even have to...

Sorry to hear about the buyer's remorse. I really hope things turn around soon.

No but I probably should check the plugs. There is a thread on here I'm in about a slight misfire and others have it. My family owns a toyota lexus shop(not a dealer), so I have the same computers they do. I'm the only one on that thread that has verified the misfires, but no real issue has came of it, nor any solution

I picked up my truck on September 1. I experienced the shift delays pretty quickly, like within the first 500 miles. If you don't have the delays, you might already have the TSB loaded. Somebody else was able to confirm they already had the TSB loaded on their 2017 from looking at the calibration numbers. You can ask the dealer to check your cal numbers to see if they match the ones with the TSB. You're probably alright if you haven't experienced it yet. I would definitely ask them to check the transmission and diff fluid the next time you go in. And I agree, get the howling documented and wait it out.

You might not be able to reproduce the LCA howling with the test drive. I didn't hear it on my test drive. I eventually heard it later but just ended up just installing my own plugs from Ace Hardware. Actually, I followed the steps on the TSB myself and plugged the holes they said with tape and I still had the howling. The howling only went away after I also taped over the hole that is on top of the LCA.

You should have them manually check the trans and diff fluid before driving it off the lot. My trans was 0.5 quart low and just a little low on diff fluid. You might get some push back from them or they will probably say that it does get checked when the techs do the walk through but they don't manually check it.

2016 TRD OR LB. 6/16 build date in Mexico. Mine had it at 300 miles and is getting worse at 3K. I brought it to a competing dealer for confirmation and documentation. The selling dealer ordered me a new 2017, and that had it as well. Now I'm waiting on another 2017 that will supposedly be built in mid to late October. I really hope Toyota gets their act together and figures this out before they build the new one. Dealership has been great and has agreed to a full refund if the new...new one has the problem. Still a very frustrating and time consuming process.

Agreed. I claim bullshit. No dealer willing loses money. I find it highly unlikely a dealer sold you a 16, then willingly ordered you a 17 to replace your now used 16 and then agreed to replace that 17 if it howls too without you paying the trade/difference, etc.

My 2017 sr5 Dcsb loaner has it, it's more faint than mine but only has 500 miles on it. I'm willing to bet a lot more trucks owners just don't know yet or what to listen for.

I have been thinking this for a while. My boss has a TRD OR and he said he hasn't heard it, but I bet if I went on a ride with him I could point it out.

So brand new diff for my 16 Sr5 DCLB 4WD going in tomorrow with 8k miles. Service advisor said they called Toyota to see about the fix they said replace the diff as they've had a "few" with the same issue...

The misfires will stop all together once you rack up some miles, mine hasn't done it in at least 5k

Well boys I hit the end of the road. Toyota says my new howling differential is now normal. They said the warranty is there in case "anything happens."

I pick my truck up tonight. The service manager said the guy driving had a hard time reproducing the noise so they have determined it is normal now. Although he admitted to them hearing it, but it being "quieter." I unfortunately had it howling louder than ever just last night.

This effort was to film the noise in some special format toyota needs to analyze the noise. So that's no problem, I drive every day, I'm going to offer to film it myself however they want in whatever format they want. I can send them a video every day of it howling loud enough to overtake the cabin. I'm not interested in "dealing with it" for 125k miles. At this point, with the other issues I have, I could deal with the extra cash in my pocket and an older truck with less problems a lot easier. Im almost at the point of ditching the thing if yet another annoyance is going to be normal. We'll see what toyota wants to do when I pick it up tonight.

Just picked up my truck from the dealership. They put it on the lift and got it up to 55 mph and were able to pinpoint the howl to the pinion bearing. They have a new rear differential on order along with all the associated parts for me.

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
My howling has gotten much worse around the 10-12k mark. Just so I understand, what exactly causes the noise, and is it indicative of a problem? Or is it just annoying? Thanks
