Just picked up a 2017 off road model and already want to do a couple performance mods. First, should I wait 1000 miles or so before doing anything? Second, any opinions on a magnaflow cat-back with an AFe CAI? Thanks.

    Is a catback needed?
Would a simple muffler welded on do the trick, or is the stock diameter tubing too small?

I think stock is 2.5" and the magnaflow is 3" diameter. Just looking for a little better breathing, plus the magnaflow is fairly inexpensive.

Magna Flow is nice... don't know about the AFE intake, I use a TRD air filter. I haven't tried a soda can in my exhaust tip, I don't drink soda ...

trust me, it will fit and have wiggle room.
Is the stock exhaust size too small for a stock 3.5?

Going from a 2.5" to 3" will make you lose torque, even with a cai.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.
Neither of these are performance mods.

Unless you plan to do a supercharger, which there isn't for the 3.5L V6.... And you'd want to do a full exhaust not just a cat-back.

You don't lose torque. You will find it higher in the RPM band (dear god, push the 3.5L power band higher??) the exhaust scavenging will be most efficient at higher RPM with a larger exhaust.

I should have rephrased with "useable torque". You might increase peak HP by like 2-3 but is it worth it to lose out on torque that's lower or in the middle of your power band on a truck? Especially without forced induction, 3" is too big on a small 3.5 v6. My last car was a 5.4 v8 making 410hp, 425 ft/lbs and it had 2.75" exhaust pipes.

My bad. It just feels like I'm back on a honda forum from around 15 years ago sometimes with performance mod questions like these lol.

That's a statement backed up by facts.... sorta kinda like Magnaflow and the dyno runs with HP and torque curves.

Are you disagreeing? A cold air intake is changing temperature of the air by moving the intake out of the engine bay (it already is). You aren't increasing volume by compression or ram air.

    Edit

And a high flow filter is bad news if you actually wheel your truck in dirt.

Not disagreeing just not digging a statement of "fact" not backed up with facts.... even though the manufacturer does have facts that don't jive with what was offered up here.. that's all I'm saying.

I do know "ram air" is BS ... it works for a turbo when the intake is a straight shot to the turbo... anything with a bend in it, you loose any ram air effect or its reduced significantly. There's actual physics to show this to be true.

Has anyone PROVEN any intake on the shelf pulls in cooler air than stock?
None of the 2nd gen intakes do.... ~35mph, they ALL pulled ambient air, just like stock.

You're taking marketing wank as fact, versus what anyone who knows how exhaust scavenging works. I don't have any links to sources you'll consider reputable on hand but you're more than welcome to read around and find your own opinion.

At a bare minimum it's important to note that exhaust manufacturers are showing you "dyno numbers" off of a vehicle that is likely not yours, using fuel that isn't yours, in an altitude that isn't yours, etc. etc... the list is nauseating.

They don't because the stock intake is cold air already. It's in the wheel well.
