Truck Camping Photo Thread

I'm yet to experience one but last time was out with some friends in the trails one guy had a rtt on his jeep on the same trail as us. He seemed to have a lot of problems with trees and with the top heavy nature of it.

I might go to mec or another outdoor store and check all options out. Maybe see what the girlfriend is interested in.

 

we're lucky that if you're worried about tippy stuff, you can mount the tent lower - unlike a jeep where you're bound to the roof. Mines on a full-height bed rack and I was just on some pretty tippy stuff this past month and it didn't feel much sketchier than not having a tent. Once I get a roof rack, it'll be about the same height as the tent. Just something you've gotta think about while driving. Worth it for the nights sleep though

 

I'm not sure I understand the 'feet elevated' thing. If that's how you are lying in the hammock, your hang might be not quite right.

 

@Cuffs I may be hanging it wrong but I don't think so? Your butt is always the low point in a hammock. I just don't like my feet higher... that's just me. I guess looking at it another way you're kinda shaped like a "U" when in a hammock no matter what. Again I ike them.. have three... but just can't sleep in them is all. They're sure great for packing when hiking.

 

I'm almost 50 and I've been camping at least once a month, year round for at least 35 years. I can say that for the last 20 years or so my tents have been bombproof. Pouring rain, actual blizzards, above timber and high winds...

Good tents are worth the money!

I've got a new base camp tent- a Springbar canvas tent. 2 weekends ago it poured rain and it was fantastic- no tarp or extra rain fly. Roomy, waterproof, nice awning- less than a canvas wall tent..

Here's my solo go bird hunting set up- rainproof and plenty of shade..

Thats definitely a plus of a long bed, my SB is a little too short to sleep in the bed

 

this is true.
My major concern with a RTT is the weight and storing it while not in use.
I feel it would be hard to mount as one person.

 

Mine's not left my vehicle since installation.

Yea, kinda not quite hanging right if you're in it 'banana style.' I'm a side sleeper and lay flat in mine.
I'm no engineer so I can't explain the intricacies, but the distance between trees, height of hang points, and length of hammock(fabric) all play into the flat lay.

So haul that cute little trailer over here to Yosemite. Let's exchange some notes!

That looks like a Thermarest Dreamtime Mattress..... definitely worth going camping sleeping on one of them. Have one myself and have spent many nights on it! I want to get another and put the two in my RTT.

Do you use a structural ridgeline? That to me is the trick to a great hang/lay.

 

ya mine would more so be for every other weekend, and we have long cold winters here so wouldn't be camping then. plus comutting around the city with a tent will probably kill MPG, and if the tent sits higher than the cab might not be able to get into parking garages.
Most of my work tends to be downtown in the largest city in canada and 5th largest in north america. Sadly all the work is in the city for electricians so don't have much of a choice.

So the tent would be coming off probably after every trip.

 

My current hammock has a ridge line. After so many years hanging and not having one, I just learned the sweet spot by eyeballing it. But having it sure does take out a lot of guesswork!

I saw something like that in the back of a truck the other night. It said Tent Box, or something like that. Ever hear of that?

 

Cool I'll have to look it up.. wish you got the actual name of it. I've thought of that idea too for an ultra light option but I just don't want to have to set up when I pull into camp at 2 am and it's pouring rain lol mountains go from sunny and hot to cold and raining in minutes around here... it works best for me to pull up and be done. I'll look it up though!!! Thanks again!!!
