I'm weary about giving advice on this topic. What I can say is I preloaded my 13" 650's about an inch and change a few weeks back. I noticed the stiffness straight away and was pissed that I spent so much money on kings and limited myself of their full awesomeness by preloading for a stiffer ride. I removed the preload before big bear and they returned to being wonderful again. I'll be getting a 14" #700's soon enough. Till then it's back to function over form with the 650's. If your shocks are due for a re-build then that will certainly be helpful.

That was my take on it as well, a longer spring with less preload should make the ride less harsh.

I've had the suspension on my dirtbike revalved but never for coilovers. I'm not sure if that would make a notable benefit being that they should already be valved correctly since they're just how Icon shipped them.

Whenever coils are preloaded two things happen. Stiffer ride and loss of down travel. I think you have the right idea. Get em before the 8th. Haha

Sounds like drive line issue. :notsure:
    Is it worse on/in 4x4?

Are those numbers from where the spring is loose on c/o to where it sits now. Or is that how much more they have been cranked up from factory? Preload is how much you crank down on the spring from its fuly relaxed state. Most people get that number confused from how much they are cranked down from the factory setting

I might be doing the same. Preloaded my Icons as much as I'm comfortable with, still rubbing a bit on top. Going to get the 14s but still undecided on 650 or 700..skids and sliders in my future, just not sure how soon.

Down travel (droop) isn't affected by preloading the springs. Up travel (bump) can be affected but only if you preload the springs to the point that their isn't enough travel between the individual coils of the coil spring to account for the amount of travel the shaft has.

It's the length of threads showing. The top thread/bottom of the coilover hat (if that's the correct verbiage) to the top of the coilover preload ring.
The truck was bought with them already on so no idea where they were set from Icon out of the box.

I stand corrected then. As I mentioned im very weary about giving advice on springs. What I do know is I don't like the stiffness that occurred with mine after I preloaded. Respek

Yeah, but when I'm in 4x4 I'm on rough/rocky terrain so it's hard to tell if it's exclusive to it or not. It does happen in 2wd (especially the heavy shifting/grinding sound, that happens whenever I go over a speed bump). I think I might be looking at both a driveline issue and something with the suspension. Hopefully the driveline is just the u-joints or something :notsure:

Last time my U joints we're going out I would sometimes feel a thud when shifting into drive or reverse. Also got a slight rumble strip feeling at certain various speeds.
