I'm at 7300km and happened on the way to the dealer last night. It has been becoming more frequent, not less. It's not the shifter being stiff or not coming out of gear, it is the shifter hitting a brick wall when going into first or second.

I have a 2nd gen 6-speed with 54,000 miles and it recently has started doing this nearly every day where I'm stopped and it won't go into 1st. I'll pull it back into 2nd real quick to "move things around" and then it will go into 1st.

In fact, the last time it did this I tried to put it into 3rd and that wouldn't work either. I had to go to 2nd and then 1st.

I'm very easy on this thing, I don't drive it hard, and I changed the fluid at 30,000 miles as recommended.

I really love the truck and it has given me zero problems. I wasn't expecting to deal with shit like this at 54,000 miles.

Happened a few times early on, actually posted in the fan club thread about it. Same symptoms, would not go into first regardless of force. Just over 2500 miles now and the issue is gone.

Pretty pathetic how Toyota doesn't give a crap about the manual transmission... it's really simple to make everything work. You suck Toyota. Go get some advice from Porsche on their GT3.

Detents in the shifter rails hold the transmission in the gear you've selected .
Interlocks prevent 2 gears at the same time .
If the OP couldn't select first or second ( brick wall ) , You can suspect an interlock issue .
The transmission still thinks its in another gear even though the stroke was made to the shift rail and moved to the neutral position .
This happens on new transmissions once in a while .
This happens on older transmissions very often

Mine was the same way. Happened 2 times when new and now with 18k on the truck it has not happened for a long time.

I haven't had issues with getting into gear but I agree about the low gearing. It's pretty aggressive for driving from a dead stop in traffic. Shit feels like a horse sometimes. I don't mind but my passengers do.

I hated the low 1st gear until I started using the truck off road.

This will explain the 3rd gen's horrible driving experience off the line.

R154-Found in Toyota cars until 2004:
    • First Gear: 3.251:1
    • Second Gear: 1.955:1
    • Third Gear: 1.310:1
    • Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    R155-Found in 2nd Gen Tacoma
    • First Gear: 3.95:1
    • Second Gear: 2.06:1
    • Third Gear: 1.44:1
    • Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    R156-Found in 3rd Gen Tacoma
    • First Gear: 4.31:1
    • Second Gear: 2.33:1
    • Third Gear: 1.44:1
    • Fourth Gear: 1.00:1

Looks what they did to the ratio on the first gear!
The 2nd gen was bad enough, but then they went and lowered it even more SMH
Triple-cone synchronizer was added to first gear on the R156, making it shift smoother into first.
I'm going to look into replacing my first/fifth gear R155 to that of a R154 to get:
    • First Gear: 3.251:1 (better start off line)
    • Second Gear: 2.06:1
    • Third Gear: 1.44:1
    • Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    • Fifth Gear: 0.753:1 (translates to 108% of current mpg)

I would love to get ahold of a R156 first gear triple-cone synchro and see if it will fit in the R155.

I've got the shitty throw out bearing issue that some threads refer too, but I have also had this issue a couple times after super long drives. I can't get into 1st or 2nd. But 3rd-6th is always open. If I shift into 3rd it basically "opens" 1st and 2nd. I can't explain it. But I can always shift into 1st after hitting 3rd. Never had to start from a stop in 3rd gear. Sounds terrible. Maybe try the 3rd gear then back to 1?

Disagree. First could be even lower in my opinion.

So could reverse, actually. That ratio choice is a WTF to me.

If you need a lower first gear, you're doing it wrong- you need a crawler box.
I agree, reverse could be a little higher.
