don't let this forum make you regret your purchase.

@Aussiek2000 has the quote as his signature
It seems to be 50/50 on having the diff howl and not.
From the sounds of it toyota is trying to work on a fix for it. So even if you do have it when you take yours it will probably have a new fix by the new year.
Many love the new truck. Don't let a few threads on here by the same 5-8 people make you worried about it.
After being on this forum since the 3rd gen came out to see all the reviews and what problems they are having, I'm still set on buying one.
Every time I see a 3rd gen on the road now I go out of my way (actually had one guy get out and start screaming at me for following him)
to get beside them or something to ask them how they like the new one and what not. Of the 8 I've asked now only one said he had a slight howl, the other 7 said no sound at all and they have been listening for it because of threads like these and still nothing. They all, including the guy with the diff howl, say they would buy another one and that they love the truck.

The one guy that said he had it is the second Canadian model I've heard of with the problem. So if you are in the Canadian market it seems less likely to happen to the 3rd gens lol. Which makes me really happy :canada:

According to the poll the howl is in about half our trucks. When diffs are replaced the howl almost always comes back. You would think it would only come back in half the replacements. This to me, points to something else in the truck causing the howl. Bet if you pulled the diff from a quiet truck and put it in a howler, it would howl too.

i think it was @Z50king had the dealer confirm it is 100% the diff.
They replicated it on a hoist (somehow) and heard it from the diff.

Could be wrong on it being z50king but I did see someone on here posting how it has been confirmed to be the diff.

The good thing is, I suppose, is that even though this motor is set up differently, it's not a new motor and is a good one. The qc issues are fairly small, fixed with hood glue, tsb for shifting issues, and even this will likely be fixed shortly bc is costing toyota a lot of money. It's a lot of little things, many of which are carry overs from 2nd gen and toyota in general. I think it will blow over and people will see these trucks as a tacoma in the future, but we don't know yet. Generally if it makes it out of the warranty I would say it will be fine, lots of people adapt the later years changes to make their older one better, and I would say the same will happen here. It's nerve wracking for me because I've always wanted a tacoma, was really excited for this one and only was able to get it because I got help from family. Which makes it worse for me since it's not just a mistake on me, I got others potentially paying for a mistake. I too only found these issues after payment, unfortunately I also had already received the vehicle and no going back now

I've heard guys say many thought the 2nd gen was shit when it first came out, saying stuff like 1st gen was the last great toyota midsize.
now its the 2nd gen was last great midsize and the 3rd gen is a turd.

Give it time and it will be loved like the others.
in 10 years when the 4th gen comes out we'll have a repeat lol.

Just because they have a track record of being good doesn't mean they all will be, kind of flawed logic. I've owned every gen and every config, this is my 5th taco and this one has had the most issues, all relatively minor to me and addressed except the diff and all within 3 months of ownership, a betting man would say thats not good odds for long term reliability/longevity as none of the others had so many issues and within such a short time frame of ownership. Only time will tell though if this truck proves as reliable as the others did. I would still buy a toyota before anything else though.

I recommend test driving the crap out of it. Get it up to speed on the highway and feather the throttle at 55-65 mph. See it it howls. See if the howl bothers you (because it will howl). Then do a bunch of 45-50mph stops as if you were coming up on a light and needed to roll to a stop. See if you get a rumble strip feeling from about 25mph downward.

Also, have them do the transmission TSB right out of the gate--and make them address the LCA TSB.

DO ALL OF THIS BEFORE YOU SIGN ANYTHING or do your final paperwork (even if you put down a deposit). Walk away from the deal if you aren't satisfied. Demand any deposit back--especially if you can reproduce the issues...they dont get to keep a deposit if they cant provide you with a truck that was agreed to.

Like I said earlier. I love the truck and I also hate this pos. IF you can try it out and make sure you got a good one, then go for it. But, I couldn't recommend these trucks as they stand now. It's too much money for some pretty serious issues.

I was thinking that something in a particular truck makes the diff howl. No idea what that could be. Just saying the same quiet diff in one, would howl in another.

I got a 2017 4x4 OR and at 1300 miles I started hearing that rear diff howling Right now it is very faint around 50 to 60 mph. I suspect it will get louder as time goes on. If Toyota does not come up with a fix this I am not sure I would keep the truck. I will just play this by ear. If the howling noise stays the same I think I can get use to it. If it gets any louder I think I will trade it in Some folks have reported rear diff leaks which I am keeping a eye on. I love Toyota but this is unacceptable and I am willing to cut my losses and move on What really concerns me is how does a brand new vechicle which has been noted over the past year to have problems with hood vibration, CPS sensor problems, rear diff issues, Entune problems, low trans and diff fluid still have these problems as of today. I am now hearing that some of the TRD pros are experiencing some of these problems.

They ran it at 55 on the hoist and the howling was there. There was also a grinding sound. The mechanic had his stethoscope and put it to the diff and confirmed it was the diff. He told Toyota and they said to replaced the diff.

This argument is flawed because nowhere near half of the people who hear the diff howl are having them replaced. Most people don't care

Also many of those people not having them likely just can't hear it or don't know what they are listening for. My 60 year old coworker can't hear it, too much led zeppelin. It's one of those frequencys I could see people just are unable to hear

I agree. Some people don't mind hearing it, and some people can't hear it. Just saying when these diffs are replaced, it doesn't fix the howl. I believe it's the diff that's making the noise, but I think there's something in the configuration of the truck that's causing it. Some sort of angle problem maybe. Just an idea.
