Whether or not you need 4x4 depends on what you will use your truck for. You statement about not being able to "get out of your driveway because of 1" of snow" seems odd? I've been driving 4x2 with limited slip rear ends for years and find that with a few hundred pounds of weight in the bed and I can go anywhere I need to go, so unless you live somewhere where there is a lot more snow than one inch that hardly seems like a reason to get 4x4.

one thing that no one has mentioned is that used vehicles normally have higher interest rates, so if a potential buyer can only get approved for a used vehicle AND they are using dealer credit, the dealer would make more money on interest on their auto loan.

You know what tires are just as important. In my case I had high performance tires on my 4x2 so that did not help my case. Also last year we got 30 inches of snow so even with sand bags in the bed would not have done me any good

Trade it in on a Ford or Chevrolet. Then you can go on their forum and discuss your problems with their vehicle. I think you have already covered all of Toyotas problems on here.

Buyers remorse story...well sort of. More like buyers wife's remorse. I traded in my 2007 4x2 because I was often finding myself in situations I needed4x4. Bought a 2015 SR5 Access Cab 4x4 MT. I loved the MT. My wife hated it. She drove a stick from high school util she was in her 30s so it wasn't that she doesn't like any MT, just the one on the 2015 Tacoma (it does shift like a truck, has a heavy clutch, and shift points that are hard to learn if you only drive it occasionally). The only thing I didn't like about it personally was the high RPMs on the highway. We have a lot of cases where we have to swap cars (when I have to carry 5 people). Long story short...traded it in on a 2016 automatic. I felt stupid for having to trade only one year after buying it, should have had her test drive it, yada yada. But...life is happier at home now. The 2016 runs better on the highway. Overall happy with it, but still miss the MT.

Did you drive it for 10 years in Buffalo? That's kind of impressive if so, given the winters they have. Did you off-road it at all too?

Off road? I think I touched a parking block... once and the tires were 245/60/14 Firestone ss, if I remember correctly and, yes Ontario and New York. Edit: and put 300k on that bitch

How many lbs of sand bags in back during the winter? Did it have a camper shell for added weight? This is good to see, as my job keeps threatening a Midwest relocation for me. Prob won't happen but you never know

Had a fiberglass cap (shit, I wish I could remember the manufacturer) and manual transmission is a must

Hey everyone, OP here. Since I'm keeping my truck for a few years before trading in on a new 4x4 (as there is no trade-in credit here and I would have to pay tax twice on $30k plus vehicles if I traded it in or sold for 4x4), I'm now thinking about gearing up for winter in my 4x2 OR. Anyone have any tire recs for mountains, snow, dirt and roads on the stock TRD OR wheels? Also, should I then think about a shell for extra weight? I'm def not gonna just keep sandbags around....

And if I've read correctly the locker is no good for snow (unless stuck). Should I know anything about the Off Road traction control that I don't know (which is nothing)? Winch maybe just in case?

Any tips from pre runner mountain folk?

Thanks! The love affair with 4x2 must begin now (and end in two years when it's paid off and I trade it in for a 2019 4x4)...

Smart move financially OP, and who knows you may learn to be perfectly happy with it long term.

Shell on the back wouldn't hurt for added weight. I'll let others chime in on good snow tires, not my specialty

Extra weight in the back is a must with a RWD pickup in snow. Friction is a combination of the texture of the two surfaces but also the normal force between the tire and the snow, and there is nothing back there for weight.

Sometimes in life u just have to take your lumps! No one is perfect & if it won't breakup your marriage I say go for it. Just learn from your mistakes. At my age I know exactly what i want & when I deal with salesman if it's not exactly what I want the deal falls through. I'm always respectful & appologetic for wasting their time but better time than my money. I also live is SoCal & wouldn't own a truck that wasn't 4x4. Good luck

Even 4x4 is inadequate to be brutally honest

I got a 4x2 w/ LSD, goes to the desert - just gotta drive faster through sandy sections, been stuck plenty - keep a good tow strap handy, all my buds have 4x4's to tow me out. Got tire chains for snow - 4x4 is King!! But also more $ - Loosing 5G's would really be a bummer

Crap. Are people still telling me to eat $5k and get a 4x4?

Here's a story: I went to look at a 2012 Off Road 4x4 today with 30k miles. At the dealer I bought this truck from. They offered me $30k ($4k loss) on my three week old TRD OR DC purchased from THEM on Labor Day. Mind condition, no plates yet. And tried to sell me the 5 year old 2012 for $29k. Plus tax and licensing. No trade in credit here in CA.

Of course I walked. This is now my truck. So go to hell everyone telling me to eat it and get a 4x4 ;)
