So, curious, I know you said you didn't try and restart it, but to those that know more about this CPS failure, would it have run again in the Tacoma? Is it an intermittent failure like so many electrical problems or is it a once it fails you are dead thing? If it restarted I'd be milking the hell out of the truck limping it to a dealer and then make them fix the bastard. Did the same when my head gaskets blew on my 6.0 F350 off the beaten path hauling some cabinets to a job.... talk about a smoke show.

Reminds me of the time my damn 3 year old Ford F350 electric gas pedal failed... yep, that's right, the gas pedal. Truck ran great, just couldn't go anywhere lol. Swapped it out and bam, back in business. Well, it was a diesel so I suppose it was the accelerator pedal ha.

Good luck with the repair, sucks it happened.

When my CPS failed, once the truck cooled down, it would start and run until it got up to temp again, then it would stall. I was suprised when the flatbed wrecker showed up, and the guy got in my truck, and drove it onto the wrecker, and then at the dealer, it drove fine to the bay. The problem, is that it throws multiple codes (I am told) that make the diagnosis difficult. You need to INSIST that they check the CPS, or they tear down the engine, replace crap that doesn't need replaced, and then you break down again in 47 miles (in my case).

Chryslers products did the exact same thing when they would lose a crank or cam sensor. 1998ish-2007ish

If it was a newer ford it probably would have driven home with no problems to begin with
Chrysler or now fiat products fucking suck. I hope Toyota isn't headed that way

Like all manufacturers, Toyota doesn't make their own small parts. They are sourced out, usually to the lowest bidders.

Tacomas are no ordinary vehicles, hence they are to be held at an impossibly high standard, because reasons.

True story. I had an 05 Hemi GC that had a CPS go bad...hard to start sometimes. $25 and 20 minute fix. First and only problem it had at 90k miles. Traded for a Tacoma...now on the 3rd one. I've had good luck with all, luckily.

Is it true that they have to totally take the cab off when doing certain repairs on the F series 250 and above

Dude, it is totally true!! I walked into the shop during repairs, my chassis is on the ground and my cab was on the lift. They literally couldn't access the heads without pulling the body.

Surprisingly, other than a few weird washers near the radiator to make it fit, I drove that truck another 75K miles without a squeak or complaint ha.

Crazy thing, I still know the guy that bought it a few years ago and he's still happy. Happy ending I guess you'd say.

@Truggin Is anyone keeping track of the build-date range of the failed CPS's? It would be nice for folks to know if they are in that range. I'm sure Toyota has this all on a spreadsheet, but since they aren't sharing, we can start to put the puzzle together.
