It's damned convenient when the power's out, that's for sure. Even during the summer, since it's in the addition. I can open all of the windows and close the door to the rest of the house, so it doesn't cook us out.

Noel, what do you burn through cord-wise for the season?

Depends on the winter, really. I put up around 5 cord every year. Last year I only burned around 3. The year before that I burned all 5 and I spent the last few weeks of the season mixing in some semi-seasoned with the good stuff. In an average year it's a solid 4 cord, probably. The Hearthstone in the cellar is pretty efficient; a load of wood burns for about 10 hours or so and it keeps the 2200 square feet of house at a comfortable 70-73 regardless of what it's doing outside.

Sad news this morning. I've been having some trouble with my ML-ACR. It won't connect the batteries on Auto, and when you switch to On it will connect momentarily then flash one of their cryptic error codes.
One thing I need to try is moving the grounding wire to another ground point, maybe the main battery negative terminal. If that doesn't help I'll start the process with BlueSea to RMA/replace it. Till then my amp is slowly draining that aux battery.

I think my problem is I live in an overpopulated area so I wouldn't stick around since its not a solid SIP location and way too unsecure. A BOB is something I'm still working on, unfortunately I kind of rely on 2 mobile boxes and my truck for my emergency ride out. I should probably pick up a genny as well just because Waltham has been suffering from random outages lately (I lost power 3 times last week for no apparent reason).

Wow, that's kick ass. I just bought a wood stove on a much different scale- for the ice fishing shack. Similar to this:

Thanks. I picked it up in pieces out of Craigslist, restored it and put it back together and we've been using it for Sunday breakfasts ever since.

    Better shot:

That does make it more difficult. I'd have a totally different approach if I lived somewhere urban. Namely, moving to the country, haha!

We lose power fairly regularly here, too. And usually for 2-3 days, if there's wide-spread outages. Being a dead-end road off of a secondary road, we're not high priority. Our first winter in the house we lost power for over a week around Christmas. Opened our presents by lamp light, lol. That was what really kicked me into high gear with getting the house set up for off-grid living, honestly. We were plenty comfortable with the wood stoves, but had no easy means to get water for drinking/cleaning dishes/bathing, or a means to heat it easily either.

That's a neat design. Seems like it'd work well for a small space like that.
I'd have stripped that OD green off and painted it with black hi-temp first, though, if it were me.

I picked up a propane generator a few years back and it's a good solution for places that seldom lose power. It connects to BBQ or RV cylinders and I always have 4-5 of them on hand. It's quiet, doesn't stink and I don't have to worry about the carb getting gummed up from old fuel. Propane generators are a little more expensive than gas, but if it won't get run frequently, I feel it's a good option.

For sure. If I'd been looking at buying a new generator I'd have gone propane. But I bought my gas unit used for $100, so the price was right. :notsure:

I just make sure to turn off the petcock and run the carb dry every time I shut it down.

Mine is gas too. I've seen carb conversion kits to add propane or natural gas turning it into a tri-fuel. Anyone have experience with them? Propane would work great for me as I have a 100 gallon tank (250lb) at the house for the stove and grill.

My uncle converted a gas generator to LP and it works fine. I don't know if it's dual fuel, tri fuel or propane only though. The conversation seemed really quick and easy and it runs well. The problem with converting is power will be a little lower so you might not get the same peak and running output that it had when running on gas.

The one I got is actually more refined and is black but it's hard to see it was made from an ammo can in the pics. I just thought you guys would think I was way more tacti-cool if you saw it was an ammo can.

You can make them yourself, but I'm a poser and bought mine.

Probably a better option anyway; I'm sure that the OD green puts out some pretty raunchy chemicals when it burns.
