Thanks for the info guys, I will see what this dealership knows about this issue in person tomorrow. I will see just exactly what the TSB that the gentleman spoke of is. I am hoping to arrive around 4:45PM. I am not sure how long the service department is open. I have been wondering about one thing all day, maybe there is a member here that can answer this question. Does anyone know how many Tacoma's were made that are here in the US that could possibly have this problem? Also I have heard talk on here that it may be not just limited to the TRD Tacoma's seems like said there were some SR5's that had it also. I would have to think is would be a large number right? if so then how many or what percent have this issue? I am just wondering what the failure rate is on these. I have done a lot of google searching and this is the ONLY thread I have found that addresss this issue. I wonder why is there nothing else out there about this issue? If there is anyone that has any other site, or forums that address this for these years? I would like to know about any other site(s) that address this issue so I can try to further educate myself about this. I will post tomorrow evening if I hear anything in the rear end of my truck and what I find out at the dealership. Thanks for your thoughts on this, I can see I have a lot of learning to do and I am glad this site is available!

This thread is a poll, the poll currently is a about 30-40% report having a howl, based on the population surveyed in the poll, that would mean possibly 30-40% of all owners (including ones not on TW have the howl). My 2017 SR5 loaner has it at 853 miles. It starts out faint and usually gets louder over time and most might not even recognize they have it or contribute it to the LCA whistle. I've found TW to be the most up to date source for anything Tacoma related in the 6 years I've been a member and owned tacomas. It is not just TRDs, it affects all tacomas from sr5 to TRD, to SB to LB. You have to remember the truck is relatively new, there wont be a lot of info on goggle about it if any, again this forum is the best place for anything Tacoma. No one will kno the failure rate if any again because it is a new truck with limited time on the road which is also why Toyota likely isn't working on a problem fix yet or is but dosent quite know the reason/how to fix it and they aren't going to jump the gun and put out a TSB if it dosent solve anything, they will make sure its right, they are conservative, which is why model changes, etc. are slower than the big 3 domestics. Most dealers are behind the curve compared to TW knowledge, I am always educating my service advisor of new TSBs, etc. as well as salesman, again here is your best source.

Here's a truck I have in for a rear end whine. Ring and pinion weren't machined correctly. Caused the carrier bearings to side load. You can see the uneven wear in this race.

Thank you! Looks like there is something going on. Nice to see that it's not a "characteristic" of the truck. You should send to Toyota maybe help them figure out the issue.

Hey @Aussiek2000 are the Silverado's having rear end issues? I had a 2014 for 5 months, was a pretty solid truck minus the erratic 6 speed at times. Super quiet and killer mpg for a V8 half ton.

Just picked my truck up with a new rear diff in it. No more howl for now. We will see what it's like after I put some miles on it.

I've worked on 1000's of these trucks. This is the first one I've seen with a rear diff issue. One other guy blew up the front diff driving around town in 4lo

Just a moron. You'd be amazed the amount of trucks and suvs I pull in the shop that they have it in auto 4wd. It's not meant to function like an AWD system. It's for patchy snow/ice. I flip it back to 2wd on all of them
