Original brakes had 86k miles!

So, just thought I would share with you guys. My brakes were starting to chirp here and there, so I took them to have them looked at on Sat. They were the originals that came on the truck! They had 86k miles on them, and still had about 30% left on them. The rotors were warped a little, which was giving me vibes when braking. Dont ask me how that happened but it did..

 

Did you use your feet like Fred Flintstone to stop the truck instead of the brake pedal?

 

No thats the weird part. I had a little shimmy but nothing bad at all...the new ones are a vast improvement, but was anything out of the ordinary.

 

that's nothing...i've been over 100k on original brake pads before in vehicles...that's the beauty of having a manual tranny...you can downshift to save your brakes to help slow you down

 

Yea, I have an auto. Thats a lot on one set of pads. Maybe I used to drive like I stole my other cars, but I would be lucky to get 40-50 out of them. Maybe its just getting older and wiser. Who knows.

 

i bought my truck at 50k and haven't put brake pads on yet... the original owner was older and im sure he didn't drive like a bat out of hell so i doubt he put any on either...

i just rolled over 80k (auto tranny)

 

My mechanic told me that 80K is about normal , depending on how people drive of course, my neighbor just changed his on his 04, V6, 5spd at 92K . Had a little bit left on the pad. Changed out rotors and pads. Good for another 5yrs.

Yea, Im right with you bought mine with 45k mi, I have an auto tranny, and just rolled over 86k.

I guess I just drive to fast from stop to stop...HA.

 

I changed mine around 68k, still probably had 5-10k left but they're pretty cheap and take all of 15 min. to replace.

 

Wow, that's a lot of miles between brake changes.

You can do the same thing with an automatic. There's a reason they put a shift lever on them you know.

That said, brakes are a lot easier to replace than clutches in either kind of transmission so I don't get too agressive with it. I'll drop my automatic down to 3 or 4 going down a hill and down to 4 coasting up to a red light.

I've always gotten > 60k miles out of Toyota brakes and rotors often last through two sets of pads. I think a lot of people coming from full size domestic trucks (that are heavier and use a softer pad material) are surprised they don't need to replace pads every 30k miles.

 

i sold my 02 taco w/auto with 125k miles with original brakes.they still had alot of life left.if you drive normal(if that is possible)you can bury the miles on factory parts
