At least they are looking at it. Toyota Corporate listened to my howl on the second differential, acknowledged it and then said it was within "normal range" and that at least it is under warranty "in case anything happens."

Interesting armchair analysis there. So if anyone is wondering why differentials are being replaced with no cure, that is why. Because they are replaced, still howl, but the second one is marked as "normal" and "fixed" so the issue gets closed and set as "resolved." Hence the endless swirl of replaced diffs.

Did the guy tear down the carrier assembly and find the bad pinion bearing? And why did he bleed the brakes?

They have to note some sort of failure when submitting a claim to Toyota in order to get it replaced under warranty. Others have reported the same sort of write-ups on their ROs.

So you don't actually know it was a bad pinion bearing?

The tech had gone for the day when I went to pick it up...I have to go back in a few days to take care of some other business so I will ask him if he took pictures of anything while he was in there and let you know. He may even still have the parts there waiting to be sent back in.

Wasn't my repair, but I would be willing to bet that the tech did not confirm that. Toyota is having the service departments replace these diffs rather than pursue a fix. They have to select some sort of failure though when submitting these claims.

He told me the day he troubleshot it before ever calling Toyota that he pinpointed the sound to the pinion bearing.

If they broke the diff open I think that would be the first instance that we've heard of a service department actually doing that. Would be a step in the right direction if they are. Let us know.

I still don't get why this is only one speed specific?
Shouldn't it be consistent across all speeds and at most just intensify at a higher speed?
Or the fact that it goes away after 65mph or so?

It almost seems like its some sort of resonant frequency.

    I doubt he benched it.
If they did, I'd be worried; I don't see enough parts for reassembly.

I have also noticed the howl from 67-70 mph as stated a handful of pages back. Have noticed it for a while now on my 2nd diff. If others are like me, they don't spend a whole lot of time in that speed range, so it would be harder to notice. The 55-60 range is a pretty common speed I would think.

maybe down there I guess so.

Highway speeds here are posted 100km (60mph) but average speed is more like 120-130km (75-80mph)
Streets are either 60km (40mph) or slower.

You know everything is a little slower in the south!

Most highways here are posted 55, except the interstate roads which tend to be a little higher. Outside of city limits the speed limit is 55 unless otherwise posted. Most of my driving is done right in the howl range, which becomes super annoying.

thats why I almost feel its a resonant frequency type thing.
which would still be a really big problem lol.
Tacoma Bridge (coincidence?) is a perfect example of what can happen with a resonant frequency

ya see there's a petition for Ontario to raise the speed of all the 400 series highways which are the major highways here to a speed of 120km in city limits and 130-140 in rural regions since those are pretty much the speeds everyone does.
Oddly in all the cities they keep lowing all the main streets speed limits to 50km from 60km. Some have gone from 70km to 50km even its starting to get really stupid. On any road not posted outside of the city its supposed to be assumed 80km, which means everyone is doing 100km lol.

Just as I was driving home about an hour ago I was thinking when I get my tacoma to see if I have the howl I'll need to do 90-100km, which would be slightly dangerous here. You'll have a car right on your ass before you can even look up at your mirror.

I might have missed it; any commonalities noted?
Anyone with a non-locker rear end have the howl?

@ZachMX just had his replaced and I think he has an SR5. Seems to affect all models for those that are "lucky".

Are lockers an option in SR5s?
