Multiple Front Wheel Bearing Failures

I just had my fifth (yes, five) front wheel bearing failure on my 05 4wd trd at 127,000 miles. I called Toy Cus Serv and they said they had no recorded issues with front wheel bearings (of course they would say that), but I see multiple failures in this forum. I drive 85% paved roads, 10% gravel roads, and 5% dirt on my farm. No water over the axles. I bought Toyota for its "go anywhere reputation" but I'm not sure I can afford to keep driving Toyotas. Any similar experiences or solutions?

 

damn, what do you have for lift and wheels/tires? I had to replace one around 65k, seems to be holding up just fine. 5 is definitely a lot, and they're not exactly easy to change!

 

When did the first one fail?

 

Who's replacing the bearings? Either they are getting damaged during the install or something else is out of spec.

 

Dont get dishartened this is not normal ... You can still trust your Tacome for " go anywhere rep" Something is not right maybe its a cheap part, cheap installation, or something else ... unless you are buying the OEm parts from the dealer and those parts are going bad.

 

Yeah....Something ELSE is wrong with your rig- Instead of just blindly replacing wheel bearings- Have them look deeper to find the actual problem.
The Tacoma isn't known for eating wheel bearings- so it's not a Toyota/Tacoma reputation thing- It's your truck.

what is going on with your truck that you or your mechanic thinks its the bearings ?? Are you taking it to the same shop everytime something goes wrong? here is an example ... My truck had vibrations while accelerating. 2 mechanics told me it was the hub assembly, one told me it was the u joints. I thought majority rules so lets get the hub assemble replaced. Well guess what? it wasnt the hub assembly it was the u- joints. You may want to get more than 1 or 2 opinions on diagnostics...

 

Thanks for your replies. Let me answer. First, standard trd suspension / factory size tires, factory alloy wheels. First fail (left front) at 89k - dealership replaced and failed again at 120k - non-dealer reapir. Right front failed at 109k, non-dealer repair, failed again at 118k, non-dealer repair, and failed again at 127k which the dealer just repaired. All failures are REALLY wheel bearing failures - jack the wheel off the ground, grab the top and bottom and wiggle the wheel in and out 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Dealer repairs were OEM parts and I believe other repairs were aftermarket parts. Any more thoughts or suggestions?

 

The first sounds about right (89k), though I'd expect >100K. Something is putting pressure on those bearings and causing them to fail. Has the truck ever been in a wreck? Are you getting alignments after you replace the bearings?
