I think the station off 495 (at the corner w/ 22) in Canaan has ethanol free, too. Similar distance.

    If my recollection is correct:

Pure gas=113,000 BTUs of energy per gallon
Ethanol=76,000 BTUs of energy per gallon

So, 36% less energy per gallon but that's pure ethanol. E10 should only have about 3.5% less energy per gallon then E0, so that's your fuel savings.

If it's worth it to you and maybe a little peace of mind, run the E0. But koditten is right, newer engines will run E10 just fine. Most of the horror stories are generated by opponents of ethanol (I'm not a proponent to clarify, just looking at it objectively). I'd prefer pure gas but I'm not paying 10%+ more per gallon for nothing.

Also more mpg.........which means the ethanol putting out less emmissions is bullshit sales pitch when you consider that you burn more ethanol to go same distance.

The gas part of E10 87 can have a octane as low as 83, if separation has occured.

Don't forget that it takes more energy to produce ethanol than you get out of it which makes it suck even more, in addition to the math involved in price per gallon and less mpg when using it. Waste on the front end to make it and waste on the back end burning it. And for even more suck, the price volatility of a gallon at the pump is affected by mother nature and market pressure of availability of materials to make ethanol. If it's made from corn then your fucking with food prices as well.

in hawaii humidity and weather,, if u wanna see the effect of phase separation... just leave a car unattented for 2-3 months with ethanol gas ... or better yet .. might as well just dump water in your tank and get it over with quicker

Nor the EPA or Toyota tests mpg with ethanol blend.
That should change next year when the Tier 3 standard goes into affect.

Even under ideal conditions, E10 only has a shelf life of about 90 days.

The oil companies make out too.
It's cheaper to buy/add ethanol to raise octane, rather than refine it further.
Oil companies don't go whole hog for ethanol, just in case something cheaper comes along.

With my older SBC and BBC powered trucks I calculated a 1-2.5 mpg drop with E10. I have not run it in my Tacoma yet but if I put more miles on it I would not be very concerned. I have a company van to drive to work so sometimes my vehicles sit for a couple weeks between being run and I have concerns about fuel stability with E10 (I have gone 10 weeks between fill ups before). I don't run it in my air-cooled engines or my pre-2000 vehicles (concerns with the system compatibility with ethanol in that one). However I do run it in my son's 2013 Sierra as he does turn the fuel over in that one enough. I have not run a test with E10 vs regular in it yet to gauge economy. It is designed for E85 as well so E10 does not cause me any concern as long as he turns the tanks over in a reasonable amount of time (~3 weeks or so).

I would, OP. There's a Chevron near me that sells unbranded 91 pure gas. Is what I put in both of my cars.
