I didn't read the article. During natural disasters i.e. Indonesia tsunami, cruise ships were utilized as floating hotels providing shelter, water, meals.

 

no, for one, if im on vacation I don't want to go somewhere like that and feel bummed out afterwards, and second because they are in a horrible state right now, rich people vacationing is gona make them all feel like shit

 

if the cruise ship is empty and is going to be used like that then i could see some benefits... give people somewhere to stay while the wrekage is cleaned... hospital facilities...etc.


but haiti doesn't need to be the next stop on a tour right now

 

I've been to RC's Part of the island. It has 25-ft fences around it like a compound and guys with assault rifles guarding the gates. Its still scary to see that when shit isn't going on. We were on this boat and these kids swam a mile from shore to try and sell us things that they made out of shells. It was sad. and then I got to see what they use to catch fish and its made from trash. Gatorade bottles with a tiny piece of bait in it. and They had a sail boat that the sail was made from shirts pants sheets and whatever else they could sow together. Sad place.

 

x2... and maybe this is just from past experience... but all the third world countries ive been to (nicaragua, some of the rougher parts of mexico, guatemala, belize), ive heard of the locals trying to steal your crap. i can only imagine what one of the locals down there would do just to get something from someone who is visiting.

 

Lots of reasons not to stop in Haiti right now. The benefit to their economy can't be enough to offset the potential problem that docking there could cause. Not to mention the fact that every available resource in that country should be directed at rescue and recovery right now.

There will come a time when our money spent in their ports of call will benefit them, but right now, I don't think ships will (or should) dock there.

EDIT: I read the story and it mentioned that the boats that have docked there have provided some food, etc. to the relief effort. That changes my opinion, somewhat. Any ship that can provide relief should do so.

 

I have been on a RC cruise and we stopped in Labadee, mind you this was 200..4?
For those that voted it's too dangerous, they do have armed guards and helicopters that fly regularly over the resort.. ALL THE TIME, not just during the disaster. Personally, I would stop because the resort was great and people were friendly. If something happens to me that would affect my mental state of mind I try to do things that take my mind off of the situation, such as work or exercise. As an added benefit they have been bringing supplies to help the cause, so I see no foul. Just my opinion..

I say let the boats go. From what I read, they have been delivering supplies for some time now to help with the relief when they dock.

 

If I was on a cruise ship I think stopping in Haiti would be pretty cool. When in your life will you ever be able to serve people in such need on a vacation? That would be and awesome story.

 

nope, that seems like the opposite of a vacation to me

 

The port is fucked up. Nowhere to park, no reason for that to be in the way.

 

getting mugged by starving mobs does not sound like fun

 

The economy needs it? Are you kidding me? You’er going to cause more problems and use up for supplies then your $$ is worth.
