I think the one you are looking at would be a great winch. Mine's a much older 9k and is still going strong.

I used to wheel up the 285 side of Guanella Pass in the winter. They didn't gate that side. Story goes, we made it about 5 miles past the "end of maintenance" snow pile. It was about noon with 5 in our group. We should have taken notice to the road signs being even with the snow we were driving on. The top layer started breaking but the next layer was only a foot and a half down. The 1st truck fell through around 1, almost deep enough to not open any of the doors. With some digging and winching we had him out in about 2 hours, ready to turn around and head back down 2 other trucks drove off of the ice layers into tree wells or the ditch, it was hard to tell. We made it home about 3:30 am without leaving a truck behind. Now, you could imagine, this was before LEDs, HIDs, and Treds. I'm sure we wouldn't have had any issues melting a path back home if it was today.

Yes, but you heard my Shittybilt the other weekend. It sounded, well, shitty.

You need to get a winch so you can pull me out when mine breaks.

Hmm, sounds like a long cold night. Ok, I can see a winch or two being smoked.

I personally think Warn is not the #1 when it comes to winch's anymore. I think they are on a level playing field with most. Shop smart for the features you need. For me, a rope is a must anymore.

Well, I agree there are some contenders out there, but for the price he is paying for the VR10000, that's the same as Shittybilts 8k. Warn is much better.

I get that, but for $430 it's hard to turn down.

Whatever you do, don't get the badlands. I mean, it may work every time you need it to, and it may cost less than $300, but do you really want one of your eaf friends to crawl under your truck, crane their neck up behind your bumper, and catch a glimpse of a winch that, while it probably came out of the same Chinese factory as every other winch on the planet, doesn't have a boutique name badge?
    Imagine the horror.
I'd rather be stuck until spring then face that kind of shame.

That Comeup only has 82' of rope. Nice winch but a little short on reach. The pic makes you think it won't hold much more either but I could be wrong.
I've got 120' on mine, and I've used it.

same reason i bought a smittybilt RTT, who give a crap as long as it works for your needs and at the price point you can't really go wrong!! I've looked the tent over well and it seems all the taped seams are well coated, the fabric seems on par with everyone else's tent and the mounting hardware floor seems the same too. the Mattress might be thinner but thats what they made thermorests for :D

The big winch needs the 7/16" rope compared to the smaller winches.

By all means, I'm not saying "don't by it". I think there are better deals to be had, yes. Remember, the VR series is fully made in China to compete with the Smitty and Badlands winches. I'm saying, read the specs close and make sure they match what you need.

Funny, the winch that saved the day, never stopped pulling in the story above was a Warn 8274 from the mid 70s. They are big, slow and ugly but get the job done.

Excellent point. Warn does advertise it as "entry level". With that being said, it can't be any worse than the Harbor Freight of equivalent size. Prolly made in the same factory.

those are actually worth a bit today. Collectors are all over them to put on their '70's era 4x4's.
