Im just wondering this might come off as a dumb question but the normal mileage for an oil change is 3000 miles but in the owners guide it states to change it at a 5000 mile interval. Should I stick to the 3000 mile or what the guide says?

5000 mile is fine. Best thing is to have an oil sample taken, and see what the report comes back as saying. Personally, I aim to change mine at about 3500 miles.

technically you are suppose to use full synthetic and if you do that with a good filter then NO just do it at every 5000 miles... if you use regular non 0synthetic oil then its recomended every 300 miles. I would stick to full synthetic every 5000 miles. Itys better plus the light will remind you everytime you need an oil change..

Yeah I used to change mine every 3K-3.5K using full synthetic but within the past year I have been going to about 5K every oil change. I have an 06' with a little over 30,000 miles on it. So do the math, thats less then 2 oil changes a year!!! Damn, I need to get her out more!!:D

I like to change every 5000 with full synthetic, and change the filter at every 2500 and top off the oil.

If anything the oil filter would probably be fine for at least 2 changes, though I change it every time they're cheap.

The manual calls for dino based oil every 5,000mi. Not synthetic. However, I use full synthetic (Castrol GTX Syntec) every 5,000 with a K&N oil filter. Check out www.bobistheoilguy.com for reports from other users. The absolute best way to tell when you need your change intervals is to send a sample to Blackstone Labs and see what the chemical analysis is. Someone with a 2nd gen Tacoma found using Castrol that it was still fine at about 9,000mi intervals, so I guess I'm going overkill.

Interesting. Was that with dino or synthetic?

Yeah this last oil change was the first time I went to 5K and it wasnt filthy black but just dark enough to know that it was a good time to change the oil. Oh and I run Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic with the Toyota OEM oil filter.

Castrol GTX Syntec... I'd pull up the thread but I read that several months ago... lol

Also note, from what I read on bob was that the old GTX Syntec seems to work better than the new "better" Edge

I've never heard of this before... where is it written in the owners manual? From what I understand Toyota doesn't use synthetic for oil changes, and as far as know the genuine Toyota motor oil they sell isn't synthetic either...but they still recommend every 5,000 miles.

I prefer synthetics for reasons that have been discussed a million times on this forum, but you can go 5,000 miles or more on a quality conventional oil too. Just remember to use a quality oil filter like K&N, Mobil 1, Toyota OEM, etc.. A great filter is as important as using quality oil. I follow Toyota's guide lines of 5,000 miles or 6 months, but after the engine is out of warranty, I might extend those intervals a bit. BTW, I use Mobil 1 with K&N filters. Gotta love the 1" nut on the end and the 10 micron filter media. JMO.

Full Synthetics can last MUCH longer than 5000 miles. Many of the popular Mobil or Pennzoil blends can last 8-9k miles with a good filter. Dino oils can last much longer than recommended change intervals as well. Just make sure you stick with a good oil filter, I prefer the PureOne over the factory replacement.

I used to change my oil and filter every 3,000 miles even though I used synthetic oil, Mobile. I have since concluded that I was just wasting money. Now I use the same oil and change my filter and oil on 5,000 intervals. The oil could probably last longer. If I were using non-synthetic I would probably change at 3,000 miles even though the manual says 5,000 - your truck won't suffer from earlier oil changes, only your wallet.

If you ever feel frisky enough you should get a lab to do a Used Oil Analysis for you. I would recommend Blackstone Labs as they are very reputable and make solid recommendations on your oil usage.

Here is a sample of their work. UOA is from an 06 Charger using Pennzoil Platinum and 10k miles on the oil.

Is anybody else running the Synthetic 0W30 Mobil 1? I tried it the last oil change and I have about 2400 km on it and it is just starting to turn amber. No oil consumption showing on the dipstick. How much does it cost for the oil analysis?

IMO, that's the perfect oil to run in your 4.0, especially in a colder climate. I have no idea what the cost of an oil analysis is. I hope someone answers that question, because I would like to know myself.

UOA from Blackstone is $22 I believe. There are other quality labs out there.

Changing a synthetic oil out at 5K is still a waste of money since a good synthetic can last twice that interval. A good filter such as a Pureone, Wix, Mobil 1 or K&N or any synthetic media filter will last just as long. A lot of people still go with dad's old oil change interval of 3K because that's what was thrown down our throats for 40 years. Many dino oils last beyond this interval as well, but hey it's your money, waste it as you see fit, and if it helps you sleep at night. I prefer to conserve oil since the price is constantly going up, and over time becoming a more rare resource. I have no worries going over 5K using Pennzoil Platinum and Pureone.
