Why the huge popularity of black wheels?

I've never been a huge fan of black wheels. They just blend in with the tires and fender wells and look blah.
They can look good though, especially when they have a little bright on them.
Is the black wheel thing a fad?

 

It's a preference.

 

I think they make the truck look a little tougher.

 

I don't think so, I just think they're beautiful.

 

i think it helps visually with fighting the brake pad dust that i know many car freaks absolutely hate

i was never really a fan of black wheels on cars, but for some reason i do like it a lot on trucks, seems like it just looks proper, maybe because a lot of old steel wheels are black and black steelies are classic on a truck, so now they just sell a ton of cast and forged wheels in black

I had black kmc enduro wheels, but just swapped them out for oem off road tacoma wheels, but holding onto the black wheels still...

 

Can't say I really like them myself only every other vechicle has them and I think most of them look like crap but that's just me . If people like them that's fine it's their money and they can spend it how they like.

 

Because shiny fancy chrome wheels don't do well for 4 wheeling. Most shiny chrome style rims are street rims, plus a lot of us just wanthe hose them off after they are done playing. I for one, do not care to spend 2 hours of a weekend detailing rims.

 

Chrome won't get you home...

 

Black wheels look more functional or even performance oriented. It is a fad, but it is also in response to the 22 chromes on Hummers that came about in the last 10-15 years.

 

they can look good, and they can also be pretty fugly. Really depends on the wheel design and the truck

 

-Blacks doesn't show brake dust
-Black is also easier to touch up rock rash, buff out the damaged a spray on matching finish gloss/satin/matte and it's done
-IMO having black colored armor and having shiny wheels would look silly

 

Black wheels look fine
Had them before now I have some super dark gray wheels almost look black from a far

 

Because silver wheels look stock and lame, and chrome is for pavement pounders.

 

Fads swing around. In the late '90s and early '00s, I wanted to replace anything black on my truck with stuff that was chrome. Now, we swing the other way. If the vehicle is black though, not a fan of the black wheels. It's just too much.

 

Personally, I think it's the same reason that everything is 'tactical' now. Fad.
People want to pretend they're rock crawlers even if their rigs will never even see a dirt road. Black wheels were the traditional choice for that, because a cheap black steelie was easy and inexpensive to repair or replace if you damaged it offroading. So now people are spending hundreds of dollars on custom wheels because they're black, basically. Just like in the 90's they were spending hundreds of dollars on wheels because they were chromed, or polished aluminum.
It's all about looks. If you're truly using/abusing your truck offroad, you typically don't give a damn what the wheels look like, as long as they work.

Steel is steel, aluminum is aluminum, regardless of the color. From a functionality standpoint there's absolutely zero difference between a steel wheel that's been chrome plated or painted black. Similarly, a black-painted aluminum wheel will crack just as easily as a silver-painted one.

 

If I had to guess..

Chrome is out of fashion.

Silver alloy is factory looking.

Colors other than those and black look like balls.

 

Simple black wheels looks like Ass !!! , I'm running Method polished racing wheels on my Tacoma and it looks awesome . Plus I'm running polished aluminum Weld drag race wheels on my Camaro

 

I like both. So I have my black TRD Pro wheels and BFG tires for fall and winter and then the stock wheel and all season tires for spring and summer months.

 

People don't want their vehicles to look stock, often a black wheel is their choice to achieve this.

For me, I have Discount Tire's Method knock off wheels. They ran me $280 with the appropriate backspacing I wanted. They're completely rashes to hell from rocks, I'd say 65-70% of those fake beadlocks are rashed off. Still looks good from a far, and they're cheap enough I don't mind if they get destroyed.
