Thanks for the detailed responses. So aside from the fact that I *like* driving a manual, there's really no longer a logical reason to get one (mileage or price)?

 

That's pretty much my reason for purchasing the manual....just because I like it. I did drive the automatic, and I hate to admit that automatic might be better, but if we don't tell the manufacturers with our wallets that we WANT manual transmissions in cars/trucks, then they'll go away in the future. I do enjoy shifting because I feel it enhances the driving "experience".

 

Nothing better than driving a 4wd stick in the snow. Can't wait for this winter!

 

After a week with the MT, coming from a 16' AT, the 4.3s are sooo much better in this truck. I can actually accelerate in 6th on the highway now. Not that I wouldn't down shift to 5th or 4th, but with the auto it would just lug all over the place on the highway. Also I haven't had a chance to wring it out yet since its still only got 300 miles on it, but I can already tell it accelerates a bit faster than the auto.

 

Price is 1300 or so less for a manual. Don't let a dealer tell you otherwise.

 

Yep, 4.30's are nice. Sucks Toyota screwed its customers with the 4.30 in the 2017 autos and the 3.90 manuals.

 

I thought that was totally debunked. The diffs stayed the same. I'd go back and find it but that thread was a total shit show.

Nope, not stirring anything. I stopped following that thread after it gave me a headache. My fault...

 

I meant the person who initiated that thread, I assumed he was stirring the pot.

 

That may be the case, but at the time, there was compelling evidence to support his claim. Glad to know it was proven false.

 

I agree. Even though 1 gear is pretty short with the 4.30's, it's actually quite nice in bumper to bumper traffic. You don't even have to give it gas to go from neutral to 1st. The combination of the low first gear and 4.30's makes it crawl along at 3 MPH without even touching the skinny pedal. For that reason alone, I like it!

 

If the truck is sitting even a little downhill I start off I second. first gear is almost like having crawl control. Really nice in the woods.

 

Does anybody occasionally get a little mechanical resistance going from 2nd to 3rd? It seems to happen to me especially after hanging around 3k rpm's + in second gear for more than 5 seconds. When I go to punch it to third sometimes its butter but sometimes it feels like I'm hitting things and/or meeting some resistance in the gearbox on the way to 3rd. Brought it up to the dealer at my 10k service and they of course couldn't replicate the problem. I realize these trucks aren't meant to be driven like f1 cars but it's hard not to push it sometimes! Am I expecting too much and this is just typical of the truck?

 

Mine is really notchy going into 3rd. To the point where sometimes I will even actually hear two very close "pops/clicks?" as it goes in. All other gears are smooth going into. The only other "oddity" i have is that I absolutely can not get a silent shift from 1st to 2nd unless I go extremely slow on the clutch or shift and clutch normally at a minimum of 3-3.2k RPM. Just a loud clunk and clank from somewhere below the truck. Can't clutch too slow on this truck when the engine is warm or I get massive rev hang (like 4-5 seconds for the RPM'S to drop, 3 seconds or so in the 4, 5, 6 gears).

Really just takes some getting used to and youll find other little quirks you need to work around.

Overall its good though and I'd never give it up for an auto.

 

Yep, my 2-3 has a kick 95% of the time. My 1-2 is perfect.

 

No massive clanking/clunking sound if you shift at lower RPM'S? Am I a lone wolf on this one? Seriously sounds like someone is banging two frying pans together underneath my truck.

 

Sometimes I can hear a light clunk going from 1-2 but nothing that gets me concerned, def not like two frying pans.

 

No, just a slight nick on 2-3. My STi had the same thing on the 2-3, but only 20% of the time. No clanking or anything.

 

Crazy how each truck is different. Mine is butter smooth 2-3 100% of the time and notchy feeling 1-2 100% of the time.
