Prepping for getting my Leer topper and I want to seal the tailgate from trail dust. The dogs are going to be riding back there and I'd like to keep them somewhat clean.

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
The dogs might appreciate some airflow...

I hope you open the rear window of the truck and the front window of the topper so they can have some AC then

I wish you the best of luck. It's pretty difficult to get the tailgate, the bed cubbies, and the topper rear window sealed up dust-free. Never could get it done on any truck except for the '98 with the steel bed. Even with that I riveted in aluminum bars with thick rubber underneath, but it didn't have the huge gaps along the tailgate like the later Tacomas and the '05 Tundra. Very irritating, a pet peeve of mine. One of the reasons I bought a 4Runner.

Not tailgate but on topic of cubbies metal tape and black silicon, leaving the doors off. Not ideal without the doors but dust comes in big time through the hinges and latches 20160927_222940.jpg

i have a cap on my 2nd Gen and I get very little dust along the bottom edge of the tailgate so I don't have that sealed. And I do want to hose it out now and then so I want water to drain. Most seems to come in along the top corners of the tailgate, where it meets the cap door. I've got the sides of the tailgate sealed and my cap is sealed great. I only get a little dust in those corners. Not enough to come close to bothering the dogs in their crates (those are up against the cab).

Seeing these pics has me thinking.....I may redo the tailgate sides and run it long on the top to see if it covers that little gap.

I think the cap causes the air to behave differently...sort of creates a draft back there that hugs the dust along the back.

The lower seal needs to be inverted, upside down, or bulb down. I installed mine before I found the link I posted and you posted. After about 2 days you will notice the tailgate pushes the seal down in places. Especially where the camera cable comes out the bed because of the half moon cut out. If you need to redo it this seal is enough just to do the lower part.

Yeah just twist the seal at about 4 to 5 inches from the top as in that picture and it seals up the gap no problem.
