It's really bad in upstate New York, grew up there... 10 years no matter how clean you keep it, you'll get rust if you drive it year round.

That's what I was gonna say grew up in Buffalo area and parents would get new cars every five years.

This is me in the picture. The late 80's early 90's Jeep Cherokee got hit from behind by a truck doing around 70mph with no skid marks and exploded the gas tank on impact. The man in the Jeep burned up, I can only hope he died before he burned.

 

Daaamn! Yea getting burned would be a horrible way to go. Even today's vehicles are not designed for rear-end collisions at such high speeds of 70 mph.

 

Mine had a bad head gasket. Car used to eat coolant and get poor gas mileage, but the engine ran fine. It was all of the electrical issues that caused me to trade mine in for my Tacoma.

 

I was on the VFD 25+ years ago when a Ford Escort did the same to a full size van. The van was filled with a HS volleyball team and the coaches. Ruptured gas tank = instantly fully involved. The only survivor? Of course, the drunk driver from the Escort. There were some tough old dudes in that FD, but after that clean up, even they needed the services of a grief counselor. And that was back before they called em grief counselors.
