So I bought a pioneer stereo from crutchfield. I need to cut some adapter wire and join them according to color codes. just seems confusing. is there an adapter that I can buy that will work

Crutchfeild sends you the adapter, but you need to wire it yourself. The wire kit from the deck wires to the adapter from crutchfeild. Get some pinch connectors and just take it one wire at a time. It might look intimidating but isn't difficult. Once you are done it is plug and play, there is no cutting of any OEM wires.

Plug in your info into crutchfield's site, chose a deck and it will tell you exactly what you need for steering wheel controls. I'm in the middle of doing mine now.

So basically you have to connect the wireing harness that plugs into the Pioneer with the wireing harness crutchfield sent you so you can plug it it into the wireing harnesses built into your Tacoma. When your done it will look something like this:

or like this if your solder:

Yes it is lots of wires, it's confusing, and there's no 'adapter' to make it easier :). Just go slow and you'll get it.

What about hooking up rear camera to the new stereo? Much harder? Can it be done?

I've been perusing Crutchfields website for this info. Some head units are compatible with the camera, some are not.

Pinch connectors/butt connectors can be problems ! Correct wire crimpers & correct connectors help.....Soldering is best when possible, which is 95% of the time.
