A steel casing may help from radiated noise. However it's more complex to stop if it's being induced through a circuit

Oh I see. I thought you were talking about magnetic fields.

If anything, I think it would be the amount of current these HIDs are drawing that could cause the ECU to freak. "High Intensity Discharge" lights are not known to be efficient. Drawing excessive current obviously can cause certain wires to heat with the high possibility of melting and creating shorts. Never been a fan of HIDs. I would buy a more efficient LED bulb if anything, especially in stock housings.

    agreed

all depends what type of signal it uses though. if its only a direct signal you'd think toyota would just put some diodes in the circuit board so nothing can back feed in and cause shit like this.

"It's not just Toyota that is having problems."
No shit, GM and Chrysler have been having problems for 2+ decades with the majority of their models.

The point is Toyota doesn't stand for quality anymore. If you wanna say that's OK because no one else is making quality vehicles, well that's just sad. Toyota used to stand above. Used to.

So would adding more midichlorians at the factory resolve some of the 3rd gen issues?

Or just make it throw a CEL sooner since it could see the problem coming?

Wow, I was going to get 2-stroke LEDs but I guess not anymore. Glad it was apparently a simple issue but if headlights are back feeding voltage in to the ECU who the hell knows what is getting screwed up. But the question is - is it a problem with the LED/HID unit or should there be something in the truck's wiring to isolate the ECU?

On a side note I've used DDM Tuning HIDs for 5 years and had zero issues, no extra wiring, straight up plug and play. Ballasts sketchily zip tied to the nearest solid spot.

It's a little bit more complex than that. It's not necessarily something going into the ECU, it could also be too much current being drawn out.

Now I'm not anywhere near good enough with circuits to consider myself an expert, but I do know that HIDs take a HUGE amount of voltage to fire. Like 25,000 volts to start the arc, and like 80-ish to keep it going. That's why ballasts are a thing. It's possible that the ballast design is responsible, it's possible the ECU was poorly designed, but bizarrely enough the most likely scenario is that it's a million to one interaction between two properly designed systems.

Usually, at least if it's designed right, there is circuit protection built in to the ECU and that's what we could be seeing with the random codes and engine dying. It doesn't have to fail gracefully, it has to fail safely. Kicking the engine off and throwing random codes like transmission temps could be what it does to keep the magic smoke from coming out.

It's suspect that this only happens when wet, though. I'm intrigued to see what the ultimate resolution is.

It could make sense that the headlights consuming too much current out of the system lock you out of driving the vehicle. As stupid as it sounds.

You guys have to remember that these are no longer simple computer driven vehicles which do their own independent thing when required. Now we are talking computers which are all tied into each other talking to each other at all times via CAN-BUS network and if one system goes down, chances are it will disable another sydtem which is totally unrelated but to the computers' logic it sees it as a vital resource which could be damaged over time.

Similar to how the TRAC OFF/ VSC program disables upon first CEL on even if it something as simple as an EVAP issue. If the PCM detects that there is an issue it will disable the trac/ vsc program automatically because the logic of it dictates that a engine that is running other than correct will not be able to properly engage the traction and stability programs accurately when it is so needed.
