I thought about sound deading the floorboards and doors, not sure about the roof, to quiet down road noise. Did it help with road noise? By how much?

 

I have never been a big sound guy, but I have to take my hat off to you Sir . That looks amazing

 

I did everything but the roof and yes, its a big improvement. I especially notice the lack of road noise now with no music in the car until I get it finished.

Mass Loaded Vinyl. Sound deading just stops the vibrations. MLV blocks airborne noise like. Its an acoustical barrier.

I'm not familiar with the product so I cant comment. With my truck, I used a combination of butyl mat and ensolite and as always, I'm very impressed with the results.

MLV blocks outside noise in a pretty major way. It does what dampers and foams can't and is perfect to use between the 2. The stuff most wind up using is 1 lb/sq ft & 1/8 inch thick before an ensolite or other CCF layer. The idea is full coverage though - as seamless as possible (like glued) so it's a bit of work and expense. Just under the truck & in the doors made a major difference in my 1st gen.

FWIW, this is recycled MLV and may smell. You really want the virgin stuff in a car.

 

I figured .74 before I added the small reinforcement blocks to mount the sub.

So I went back to it yesterday afternoon and got the FIX and wiring finished. As others have done, I utilized the space under the rear seats. I didn't want to see any holes and as little wiring as possible. I basically created a false floor which hides most of the wiring underneath.





Don't forget the black paint.



I wrapped it in the same black carpet to tie it all together.



Wrapped it up just before it got dark and realized I never finished the wiring under the hood...lol. I called it a night.

 

So back at it this afternoon and worked on the circuit breaker. Not sure what these two threaded spots are for under the hood but certainly a perfect spot for mounting the breaker.



I took a scrap piece of kydex that I had laying around and fashioned a mount. Kydex is super easy to work with and worked perfectly for this.





Attached with a couple of M8 cap head screws.





With everything powered now, I immediately calibrated the FIX, which was uneventful and only took 30 seconds or so. I spent a good hour playing with gains and x-over points. I got it dialed in pretty well for now and buttoned it up. I should have waited as I'm going to have to play with the gains a little bit now that the rear seats are back in. The Alpine amp has a decorative cover over the gain and x-over adjustments, I just need to find the Allen wrench again.

All in all it sounds pretty damn good for a factory head unit and line level conversion. Zero noise which is always a plus. My only gripe is the status indicator on the master volume control is obnoxiously bright at night. I'm going to email JL and see what they say. Hopefully it's as simple as just adding a resistor to the led.



This project took way too long. What did I learn? I don't miss installing this stuff for a living...lol.

For your power wires and dsp wires - did you drill holes in the cubby to bring those wires in?
