I’m getting a clunking noise that happens at very slow speeds (usually with foot off the gas and under 5mph), both in D and R. This same thing also happens when I turn the steering wheel. Yesterday it was happening quite a lot while going straight, foot on the brake, barely moving…clunked like 4 or 5 times in a row. I attached two links to videos here also. The videos are from today but the clunking yesterday was more harsh than what you’ll see in the videos posted.

Go outside and check all your lug nuts right now.

I can't really tell too well from your video, but it sounds like it's loose wheels wobbling. Especially since it happens when you turn, but it would also happen when going straight. Very, very dangerous, for obvious reasons.

:fingerscrossed: Hoping that it's that simple of a fix.

Do you have an aftermarket lift setup?

Asking because I have the same issue right now, granted I have an '04 but it wasn't clunking at all until about 2 months after I got my 5100s/881s put on. Clunks when turning, especially going over bumps. Off roading, my entire front end sounds like it's about to fall apart sometimes.

I took it into Toyota and asked them to just look over everything for me and make sure it was safe (was especially concerned about my lower ball joints going out) and they said everything looked okay. So I'm a little stumped myself.

Can't be loose lug nuts. RPM's always jump when it happens.

Hard to tell on the 1st video, but on the 2nd it appears that the jump in rpm happens each time you turn the wheel, which would be normal when you are at idle, or moving slow with your foot off the brake. We have hydraulic steering assist, so when the pump kicks in it's going to put some added strain on the motor and kick your rpm up a little. The clunk is a mystery but since it is happening at the same time as the jump in rpm, I would stick my head under the hood and have someone turn the wheel at idle and see if it's coming from the steering pump. My two cents, worth about a penny.

I'm thinking you are onto the solution my man.... Maybe some loose bolts on the P/S system...??

I had the same little clunk in my truck I figured out it was brake pads hitting the calipers every time I press the brakes a little bit going forward or backwards they seem to shift

It's definitely an engine related (pump, whatever) noise not wheels, brakes, etc. it's almost like the AC kicking in when the AC isn't even on. The rpm's also jump.

Well, the P/S and A./C would both cause the RPM's to go up..

AC off and Defrost on still kicks on the condenser to remove moisture.

Try to isolate the sound. Loud enough that it shouldn't be too difficult.

Make sure with the hood down so you can see where you going. 5200 rpm should do it, 4th gear, not too fast OP.

I'd check the steering intermediate shaft.

    Have the same thing...
After six months replaced the rack and pinion and tire rods. Was fine for about a year now it's back. After a few hours under the truck with someone turning the wheel( clunks at about a couple degrees either way in park) it seems to be coming directly from the intermediate shaft.

    Use that warranty.
While you're turning if you hold the wheel steady does it clunk multiple times? Or does it only clunk multiple times as you turn more?
