Brake pads worn out in 9 months ???

is that normal wear time?? Why would they be worn so fast?

 

probably the caliper pins corroded to where they don't release the pads from the rotors enough, or you got non OEM brakes from Walmart

 

I got Napa Premium pads and the pins were in great shape ?

 

are both pads worn evenly or is one side worn more than the otherside?

if they are both worn even than nothings hanging up, are they worn down to the warning mark? how much meat is left on the pads ?

 

usually oem pads last 65k miles and up to 100k sometimes

The deivers side is alittle worse but not much. I have the most annoying loud pich sqeul when i drive....cant stand it. It just started today after towing a jetski so maybe the added 900lbs finished off the pads?

 

There are possibilities that come to mind.

Faulty pads, made from cream cheese.

Driver error. Ride the brakes too long/too hard.

Caliper(s) pistons binding, in need of rebuild/replacement.

Caliper hardware in need of service/replacement, not allowing caliper(s) to move properly.

Rear brakes virtually non functional, causing additional undue stress on the front brakes.

With a 10k worn out rate, 1/6 the time you'd expect from a reasonably maintained system driven with some sense, I'd be looking into the mechanical options.

 

No i baby my truck unless i have it on trails. The truck just past state inspection and they only said the front pads would need replacing soon and that the bads were fine. I put all new retaining springs in with the "new" pads 9 months ago. At the time the calipers seemed fine and everything was moving as it should. I think i will resurface or replace if need be my rotors tmo and grab a new set of pads. Any suggestions on brand of pads to get? I know OEM is best but the dealer is about 30 min away and would rather ger something at a local auto store.

 

Live in a hilly area?

 

It's not un-heard of. A friend of mine who owns an Audi S5, have to have the brake pads changed every year. Perhaps your truck got a lot of brake use. As long as it works fine, and stops when you step on it, it's all good. It keeps you alive. Besides, new brake shoes won't hurt. At-least your brakes get serviced along as well.

 

So you've not looked yourself? Your just taking their word? I've seen many an inspection site that also does repairs 'sell' with comments like this. I'd be looking myself.

Most inspections only do a visual of the pad/shoe thickness and look for leaks of the calipers/wheel cylinders. If the rears don't work at all, or barely work, it would be easy to see perfection. When were the moving parts last cleaned/lubed and the shoes adjusted?

Don't see how that has anything to do with it. They are anti rattle devices for the most part.

Not sure how you determine that. Did you completely disassemble all the caliper mounting hardware, clean and lubricate? Very common binding point.

What you had was fine. Unless it was some really weird fluke, it wasn't the pads. It's mechanical. Or the driver. How long did the previous pads last?

 

If the distance is the problem, order online.

 

That squeal could be a wear indicator attached to the pads. Those are designed as a warning that the linings are down to about 1/3.

3 things contribute to fast wear on the pads:
- auto tranny
- larger tires
- towing on a regular basis

Pads are cheap and easy to repair, so long as you don't let them wear down to nothing (then the squealing will sound a lot different).

 

The inspector is my girls friends dads good friend so i trust him. I have pulled the tire off myself on both sides to look at the pads. They look bad. When i checked the calipers last time the pistons were not locked up, and i put new high temp silicon grease in all the areas i could on it (the grease is still there).

 

There is something wrong here. I have drilled and slotted on mine, ceramic pads, live in San Francisco, lots of hills, heavy brake usage, and easily get 50,000 or more on a front set. My rears need changing, 304,000 on those. Yes, the pads are very thin, but not metal to metal. Your front brakes do 80% of the stopping. I would be leaning towards a heavy driver brake foot or some hanging hardware...if it is both sides, leaning towards a heavy driver brake foot...I am on the original calipers also, everything operates beautifully...

 

when you had your truck off the ground did you try to move the wheels to see if the calipers might be dragging? Everything could look fine but with a little dragging it could wear the pads quickly...
