Best paint for sliders?

Been spraying them with black krylon for a while and it's getting old repainting them constantly. They'll peel from heavy rain, and the minute they touch dirt or a rock all the paint in that area is gone.

I primed them, and then put three coats on...what gives?

they're welded on the truck, so I'm limited to stuff that can be done with them on the truck. would also prefer stuff i can do myself to save some coin.

bedliner?

 

I talked to Jason Demello about a set for my truck (have to wait for some funds to free up and don't really need 'em till next summer at this point), and when I asked about possibly using line-x instead of powdercoat (to get a matte rather than gloss look), he said it can be done, but the liner will fall off in sheets when the bars get bumped. Apparently is has something to do with bedline being so much better at adhering to itself than to the metal the bars are made of.

Have you tried something like engine enamel? That might give you better adhesion to the metal. You could also look into some sort of epoxy paint, but most forms of that stuff will cost double or triple what it should just 'cause you may have to go to marine or aviation supply to get it.

Might try asking a local body/paint/hotrod shop in your area, they might know what's got the best grab on steel or have some tips on surface prep.

 

I'd like to ask a small question as well regarding painting sliders and armor in general, what paint would one use if they were painting their sliders/armor a different color...IE bronze?

 

I used rustleum hammered on mine. Sucks. So I will be masking and doing spray on bedliner.

 

yea that bedliner would be the best... and toughest as far as rattle can...

 

could you use bedliner as a primer per se? Throw down a coat of that, and then use the color paint you intend to go over it?

 

I suppose you could. But if the paint color chips or scrapes you will have to keep touching it up.

 

naturally, but I really can't think of a heavy duty spray paint, with the exception of maybe krylon to use to paint sliders and armor?

 

No matter what you coat it with, rocks will be scrapping the sliders. Nothing is going to hold up to a rock.

 

not dis agreeing with you on that at all, but i'd assume you'd have to touch up just as much with bed liner as you would anything else. I'm just curious as to what would hold best to the metal, i'd assume that krylon rattle can paint, im sure i'll be able to find it in the color i want.

 

Well, when offroading for me, most scratches from rocka are on the bottom of my sliders. So I just spray that really quick. Scrathes from bushes and what not are on the side of them, but those are not strong enough to take the paint off.

 

I used Krylon fusion in a satin finish and it's help up beautifully. I didn't even prime it because you don't have to with that line of paint. I sprayed two coats and it's been rained on, mud thrown on it and used om some rocks. Obviously you will need to repaint them if they get mangled on rocks, but that paint has done really well for me so far.

 

Rustoleum Flat Black. I used 3 coats to start when I got my Sliders in October. Ive had to touch them up 2x since then due to trail runs. I know what you mean about the paint comming off. I use my sliders as steps and the driver's entrance area of the sliders comes down to bare metal about every 6 weeks due to wear, I guess. I just get used to touching them up and remember that it only costs me $7 for a can of paint instead of $$$$ to powdercoat them for a more solid finish.

 

If you don't want to take the time to do the bed liner and still want grip for the tops, then look at 3M grip tape it's cheaper and works just as good

That's what I have for the tops of mine and it's great. I only used one role for both sides; I was originally going to go with bed liner but it was going to be too time consuming to tape off and what not. This was much faster and has held up great. Just another idea

 

since i have zero rattle can ability, i was just going to use a dark grey primer vs a paint. i'm guessing it should be fairly easy to maintain. debated on whether or not to use a clear coat to seal the primer layers, but in the end, it will get scratched off as well. don't think i'm going to put too much thought into the painting process. i'm sure it will get scratched up just during the weld on portion of this. i'll let you know how it comes after the install. worse case scenario is that i tape off the truck and paint them after the install.
